2021-22 (mostly 22) season thread
BGSU played well in the MAC opener against Ball State. Next up is Buffalo on Wednesday night at Stroh. UB is 2-0 with wins over Central Michigan and Miami. Should be a good game and a good barometer to see how BG stacks up against one of the top teams in the MAC.

Amy Velasco is a good player...she's not Lexi Fleming (yet) but we have a chance o be a pretty good team if she continues to develop.
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.
Re: 2021-22 (mostly 22) season thread
Losing Fleming for the season is definitely a blow, but I've been pleasantly surprised at their last few games. I think Buffalo is the team to beat with Fair at guard, but BG could make a solid run.

No game tonight at Kent State. Next scheduled game is Saturday vs. Miami. Hopefully they'll be able to play that one.

The MAC announced the rescheduled dates for a lot of games, including all three of our postponed games.

Dominating win against the CMU Molly Davises. Really well balanced attack. I’m really impressed with the quickness of Velasco. She can *move*. Nice to see Tate get some quality playing time, too. This team is a Lexi Fleming away from being a tourney lock.

Yeah, CMU is a shell of the team they once were, but that was a good win after a covid pause. Davis had 29, but BG had six players in double digits, and eight players had at least eight points. A lot of Falcons had good games, but I thought Lewis in particular did a nice job. Nine points, seven rebounds and eight assists without a turnover. After not playing for 11 days or however long it was, the team looked like they were really having fun out there.

Re: 2021-22 (mostly 22) season thread
Hempfling played great last night at EMU. She had 19 points, including 13 in the third quarter. She now needs only 3 more points to reach 1000.
Zoe Miller was really good last night as well. They kept throwing it to her down low, and she made her first 5 shots of the night on basically the same post move. Then she hit a 3.
Lewis came off the bench for the first time after starting every game prior to last night. She seems to have been struggling a bit over the last 2 games. I thought Hampton struggled a bit last night as well, but she and Velasco really stepped up in the fourth quarter as BGSU kept EMU from rallying.
I didn't realize until I looked at the BGSU web site just now, but Western Michigan is currently in second place in the MAC, so FWIW we play the second-place team tomorrow night before playing the first-place team on Saturday.

Hempfling hit 1,000 points tonight in a big time win over WMU. Very dominant from start to finish. Elissa Brett nearly had a double-double in the first half and finished with 12 & 10. Amy Velasco was huge with 15 points and some great passes. 67-51 final and the score is closer than what the game represented.

Re: 2021-22 (mostly 22) season thread
That first half was fantastic. BG allowed WMU to make just 5 field goals in the first half, and BG had 10 steals and a huge rebounding advantage to take a 39-17 lead at the half. WMU never got closer than 12 in the second half.BillyLP wrote: ↑Wed Jan 26, 2022 8:54 pm Hempfling hit 1,000 points tonight in a big time win over WMU. Very dominant from start to finish. It seemed like Hempfling was pressing a little bit in the first half, but the 1000th point came on a three-point play in the third quarter, which was great because it provided a natural stoppage in play and gave the crowd a great chance to show their appreciation for the accomplishment.
The more I watch Velasco, the more impressed I am. She is great at getting herself to the hoop with the shot clock ticking down, and she made some big baskets tonight to help crush any thoughts of a WMU rally. As you said, it was definitely not as close of a game as the final score might make it seem.
The Rockets are up next!

Nice wire to wire win over NIU tonight. Didn’t get to watch but looks like Brett had a huge game. Over .500 in the MAC now.

This team still has a chance to make a real run this year. We currently sit 7th in the MAC standings, but there are still a ton of games in front of us, and we're only 1 game out of 2nd place in the loss column. The league is really tight right now, so it has a chance to work itself in the last month of the season.

Wasn't quite wire to wire. NIU took a lead with 1 1/2 minutes left but Valasco notched 2 FTs and Hempfling hit a 3 to start a 10-1 run for the win. Neither player had a hot game but came up big when it counted.
