Close to 100 students paid good money to hear that lecture. I really don't care how focused Coach Brandon was on beating Black Hills State or whoever. He should know better.
Black Hills St moves on and will play Ferris St, Brian Rock, OC, this Saturday at 9p on one of ESPN channels.

He could be a bit of a jerk at times...and his teams were lacking in discipline ...but he coached some entertaining teams on the field. Live long and prosper, GB

In some ways he was actually ahead of his time.

I always lambasted him because he basically ignored the defense. Took every top athlete recruit and put them on the offensive side of the ball, and basically said defense didn't matter. Back then it seemed crazy (and really put a ceiling on our success), but I think had he tried that now it would work far better than it did 20 years ago.

Hope he enjoys retirement. Will never forget his comments after the home loss to Buffalo where he ripped the lack of attendance as a reason why they blew the game, or the times he posted on here back in the day. You'd never see that in today's time. Despite his fun teams, it's crazy he never won the MAC given some of the talent he inherited after Urban took off.

Yeah, he was also a bit of an asshat.

Wait. That happened? Yikes.

I like reading these eulogies to his career. No one's perfect. He won the West and got us a national ranking while he was here. I wish him the best in retirement.

I don't know that he posted here, but he sure as hell read it. As did his wife. Way more than anybody in the limelight should be. Speaking of being ahead of the times, that was a transition time. He was still very much of the belief that anything on the internet was a bunch of no nothing geeks sitting in mom's basement with the audacity to bitch about his coaching.

He definitely knew who I was (as did his wife) the second I introduced myself to him.

He had made mention to me once at Frickers that he had commented on here a couple times. Perhaps he was just blowing smoke. Regardless, you're correct that he knew who a few people were on here and that obviously we weren't shy about criticizing. In some aspect, I kind of miss the visibility he had while on campus. Not sure how active Clawson on forward were in being visible both on and off campus.

After the 1976 Miami game -- the 9-7 loss where Don Nehlen lost track of downs and missed a chance to try for what could have been the game-winning field goal -- the BG News was very, very tough on him. When the season was over, Nehlen announced he was quitting. In a media availability, he openly complained about the negative coverage he had been getting in the News.

"It never ceases. It never stops. It's always been negative about me. I can't ever remember reading a good thing about me... or my program in that paper..." he said. Nehlen added that the negative coverage was not why was resigning, but he added that "I didn't feel it was right for the kids to keep reading that all the time."

It may be that Nehlen took what the BG News was saying about him more personally because he had been a BG man for so long, dating back the 1950s when he played for the team.

I seem to remember hearing that Nehlen's wife was at that postseason press conference and that she really let the BG News know how she felt about their negativity that season. That didn't make the paper, but Nehlen did say that the coverage had been especially hard on his wife.

The 2003 team probably would have won the conference any other year. Just bad luck that Miami had an all-century team that same season.

Yeah...that 2003 team had the misfortune of going against a pretty decent team with a future NFL HOF QB running the show

I always liked GB. I’d send him emails 2-3 times a year and he would always graciously respond.

Can’t remember his username but his son posted here for a short while. Gregg never posted here, at least not as himself lol.
