Hastings tapped as an assistant coach for the Olympic team and Nathan Smith picked as a forward. They'll miss Mankato's trip to the Slate on 2/4-5 and the home weekend against Bemidji on 2/18-19. Mankato happens to be off the week in-between.

I have no idea how Mankato is still hanging onto Hastings.
He is such a good coach and can do so much better than that job. I'm just surprised a bigger college job or the professional leagues have not been able to lure him away yet. He's done quite a bit USA Hockey stuff over the years and done well there too.

I guess maybe he wants to win a Natty there, not sure. I thought after they got over the "just win an NCAA tourney game" hurdle he would be gone, but guess not. He's already groomed Knott to take over.

I also think BG made a huge mistake by not hiring Todd Knott back when Berge left. Eigner was the safe, easy hire, but Knott does a lot of recruiting for Mankato. I think he would have upgraded BG's talent tremendously. Of course don't get me even started on this current AD and athletic dept staff at BG.

Don't they pay Hastings like half a mil a year up there? It's the main sport that their boosters invest in, so I'd guess that he's one of the higher paid coaches in the college ranks. And, just a guess, I'd assume Mankato isn't the most expensive city to live in, so if he likes it there I am sure he's living *very* comfortably there.

Big salary usually means big buyout.

College hockey (college sports in general) is rough on coaches. They are hardly ever home. Constantly on the road recruiting, travel for games, conferences, etc. The head coach is a bit better about being home as they are usually more of a "closer" type role when it comes to recruiting, but they do some active recruiting themselves. Pro coaches travel more for games, but when they're home, they're home. College coaches will leave Sunday or Monday, fly to God knows where to watch as many games as possible, visit with recruits, then maybe join the team for games on Friday and Saturday (wherever they are played). Rinse and repeat all season long. A pro job, even for a little less money, is very attractive.

Thought this was an interesting visualization. Someone on the r/collegehockey subreddit put together a chart that shows team pairwise ranking by league.

Cool graph. Looks like the CCHA is the mediocre-est conference, so far!

Just noticed Brandon Hawkins is playing for the Walleye this season. He played here for 2 years before transferring to Northeastern.

He sure is. He was also a part of the Fort Wayne Komets team that won the ECHL’s Kelly Cup last year.

Masks mentioned in the Bemidji thread... I went a round with the Athletic Dept. after the Miami game:
Q: Will the Athletic Dept. enforce the University's mask mandate?
A: We don't want to be in a position to eject fans for not wearing a mask. We want to create a community of care.
Oh. Okay. So there's not a requirement.

At a different game, I was walking laps and observed a cop ask a fan to pull up his mask, so I asked if she could come into the stands and do that. She said the MAC (yes) is concerned about masks on the concourse. Oh.

A community of care while people potentially spread a virus at one of their events. What a response. Haven't been to a game this year because of this, and dealing with an infant who has covid right now, I can attest I really don't want to until this next wave settles down. Our poor girl is really sick.
