Re: BG QB Situation
Never thought the staff was going to bring in someone to compete with McDonald, he's SL's ride or die. The OL struggles make it a convenient excuse to continue using him in the starting role. Easy to say we haven't seen what he's fully capable of when blocking is suspect. That's the mantra of this staff. Melton has the physical tools to easily push MM, but his mental game is what is holding him back, especially with the type of offense being employed.

I get the feeling sometimes that rather than trying to build a winner in today's landscape...Loeffler builds a trapdoor he can fall though in case the season goes south...which it inevitably will when you have one QB who is ready to playguest44 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 25, 2022 6:06 am The McDonald injuries tend to get announced at season's end as a way to justify the terrible record. Why he continues to play injured in games in which BGSU is fully eliminated, I have no idea. Probably because exposing what the future might look like will make future trips to the moon less likely. Thankfully, Scot only won 4 games the right way. The BGSU Football team of 2027 will be so much better for it.

Or maybe he played a injured quarterback to make sure BG only won 4 games, so it sounded better when he proclaimed they "could have easily won 9 games if they wanted to"Schadenfraud wrote: ↑Tue Jan 25, 2022 2:40 pm
Or perhaps Coach Loeffler chose not to discuss those injuries during the season so defenders couldn't tee off on him and try to make the situation worse.

I've never seen a coach openly disclose an injury for a starting player. That would be malpractice. The bigger issue is not having a qualified #2 waiting in the wings in the event an injury becomes season ending.
We can all kinda joke about it now, but this upcoming season is screwed if MM gets seriously injured in camp or early on the season and has to miss any time.

He is certainly not going to announce to opponents that he had a broken wrist. He played him 2020 with the bum shoulder because he felt he had to . He played him 2021 with a broken wrist because he felt he had to. If we had a quality back up would MM have still played? Maybe with the off hand wrist. No way with the throwing shoulder. The bad part is that there was NO CHOICE for two seasons. And where does the blame lie with that??jpfalcon09 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 25, 2022 3:19 pm I've never seen a coach openly disclose an injury for a starting player. That would be malpractice. Make better picks? Do better coaching? Don’t run an offense that requires Troy Aikman at QB, with the HOGs up front? Run a scheme that MAC level talent can plug and play and succeed yearly might help too.
To beat a dead horse, his Portal goal NOW should be someone better than MM, that should win the job. Any bar set below, is a waste of time.
It’s not my point of view, it’s a fact.

Re: BG QB Situation
Not addressing the QB depth chart in a meaningful way is as big a mistake as letting the OLine go last year

Re: BG QB Situation
To me The QB position at BG has always been easy to define with the “It Factor.” The successful QB’s here have had a swagger and confidence that set the tone for the entire program. When they were on the field, you just knew they were going to find a way to Will something good to happen. We have had other players like that in Mark Szlachcic, Charles Sharon, Freddie Barnes, Cole Magner, Roger Lewis and Scotty Miller, but that “It Factor” makes the most difference at the QB position. Brian McClure had it, Erik White had it, Josh Harris had it, Omar Jacobs had it and my goddess did Matt Johnson have it. It’s a combined toughness, willingness to find a way to win and a way to infect the entire team with a confidence that we are going to win. I do NOT see the “It Factor” in Matt McDonald. Nor have we seen any QB on the roster who exhibits that leadership ability that elevates the play of every member of the team. That to me is the most crucial element for a college football team and until we have that QB we cannot hope to be elite.
Re: BG QB Situation
I would say Matt McDonald's defining characteristic is toughness. Between playing at various levels of health, keeping as composed as he reasonably can when the pocket collapses, and some big runs with physical hits in the win over Minnesota, that guy is tough.
What he needs next is consistency. He has shown great streaks here and there. And then there are awful outings like EMU and UT where everything goes to hell quick.

Toughness...or a wonky throwing motion

Re: BG QB Situation
Absolutely...I'm a pretty harsh critic of Loeffler...but McDonald stood in there and got the crap beat out of him without quitting. Have to respect that
