A few MAC teams make the top 100, not BGSU

Rivals rankings are always way off when you get outside the top 10-20. MAC classes are all a crap shoot anyway.

Even 247 isn't perfect. Recruiting now is just all over the place - especially so in the pandemic era when some guys didn't have one season in high school because of COVID cancellations.

I'm taking a wait and see approach with most of recruiting the past 2 seasons. Here's hoping most of our guys work out!

Recruiting rankings are only used when you can brag about them. When they tell you the recruiting class stinks, you dismiss them and downplay them. It's similar to saying you could have won 9 games the wrong way, but won 4 games the right way.

On a side note, the Loeffler hire and it's ridiculous nature courtesy of Kit Hughes, has now come full circle. Bowling Green has welcomed it's first fired member from both the Boston College and Colorado St. staffs to town. It seems like only one school is still excited to see this old Boston College staff coach. That school is led by Rec Center Bob Moosbrugger.

Dino Babers and Mike Jinks fault BG isn’t in the top 100. Just wait, by year 9 he’s going to have this program middle of the pack in the MAC. By year 14, BG will be competing for a conference championship.

Wasn't Dino's fault...Jinks was a disaster...has Loeffler really been better? Where we are is more the fault of Jinks and Loeffler than Babers.

So Miami (OH) pulled a better class than Wake Forest, and Marshall pulled a better class than both USC and UCLA.

Uh huh ...

Outside of the Top 30 or so the rankings can be basically considered guesswork. Ranking MAC teams is basically a waste of time. You have to develop and coach at this level. We struggle with both. Hope would be these kids are decent and when a new coach comes in, they stick around and contribute to turning the program around.

Outside of the five star kids who want to be wined and dined by the top programs, these rankings mean even less with the transfer portal. Every school is going to lose and gain players now. Should be a portal ranking system at this point to see who did the best in "free agency".

Don't ever confuse me for a Loeffler apologist but recruiting rankings at the MAC level are less than meaningless. I said it for years when Jinks was coaching his way to oblivion and people kept blaming Dino saying how Jinks was recruiting the right way with top ranked MAC classes.

The reality is these rankings are mostly arbitrary. It is highly unlikely the rankers have ever watched film of anybody we, or any other MAC school, recruit. At best maybe they watched a YouTube highlight video. More likely they've never seen them at all.

Babers teams performed well without great recruits due to his ability to coach and the fact Clawsoj did a good job with talent development. Players that did well under Dino were immediate failures with Jinks because he couldn't coach. His highly touted recruits amounted to nothing because neither he nor Loeffler could coach (and many flamed out anyhow). Loefflers recruits haven't shone either, because he cannot coach.

The transfer portal makes these ranking even less important. At the MAC level recruiting is far less important than the ability to develop talent.

2020 offensive ppg: 11
2020 ppg allowed: 45

2021 offensive ppg: 21
2021 ppg allowed: 30

Gained 10 points per game on offense. Shaved off 15 points per game on defense. That alone shows an ability to coach. The team took some major steps. Additionally the team went from winless, all blowout losses to 4 wins, and 4 other games the team was in including both divisional champs.

Loeffler inherited the Jinks trainwreck. Loeffler did what he could in 2019 and the floor fell out in 2020. The 2020 disastrous season was Mike Jinks' legacy. Now you're seeing what Loeffler can do and in one year's time you've seen solid improvement. That sounds like good coaching to me.

These were the same complaints that people had when Clawson was here. He didn't win fast enough and people wanted him gone. The progress was slow but steady and then we had several years of being consistently good until we made a blunder of a hire with Jinks. Right now, I'm willing to watch this unfold. I think bowl eligibility is a definite possibility this coming year. Non-conference we should do no worse than 1-3, but I think 2-2 is doable. 3-1 might be a stretch. What that means is we need 4 or 5 conference wins. I think we can get wins over Buffalo and Akron this year, and then it'll be a toss-up against Miami, Ohio, and Western. Toledo is losing some power at running back with Koback declaring for the draft, but it's still Toledo and I don't trust that we can walk in there and just talk them on. Central and Kent are both pretty good teams right now, so I'm not entirely sure what's going to happen with them. Unfortunately, with my layout, it seems like we may need to win all of our toss-ups and really shock somebody to get to 6 wins.

6-6 record
Wins: EKU, Marshall, Ohio, Western, Buffalo, Akron
Losses: UCLA, Miss. St., Kent, Miami, Central, Toledo

If we can't beat Marshall (which definitely a strong possibility), I don't see us taking down UCLA or Mississippi State (Miss St. would be most likely opportunity between the two). That would mean we would need to flip one of Kent, Miami, Central, or Toledo, and I'm struggling to see where that flip comes from. It also really sucks to look at those games and realize every rivalry game is currently in the loss row.
