@ Kent st (2/8)

Post by fanatic13 »

We're playing Kent st if anyone is interested. Down 15-12 with 8 minutes to go in the first half. Countless turnovers by bg do far and many unforced. Fun fact we're 10th in the country in pace

That was one of the worst halves of offensive basketball I've ever seen.

Thankfully it also might've been the best defensive half we've played all season. Of course I think both teams have benefitted from some really poor offensive play to make the defenses look better than that probably were, but still it's nice to see the effort level much higher than we're accustomed to.

Down 1 at the half. We had a chance to take the lead but a chaotic possession to use the last 15 seconds ended in a predictable terrible shot. 13 turnovers for bg and 12 for Kent

It was great to get back in it late but it’s amazing how sloppy we can play. Curtis and Mills really need to give up minutes to Gordon and Fulcher. Reece has to figure out a way to play good defense without fouling.

Overall we played decent defense but were allergic to putting the ball through the hoop.

Can anyone tell me what a block and what a charge are in the MAC?

No. Nobody can.

I'm not sure I can count on one hand the number of charges I've seen called this year in the restricted area. Not even sure why they bothered painting it on the floor at this point.

How many timeouts will Huger take home with him tonight?

What would he even do in a timeout other than have our players roll their eyes at him?

True. Well tonight he could have used one to stop the run that ended the game, or used it to rest Plowden since he should have never come out. But, that timeout to set up the defense down 10 was more worth it.

Defense wasn’t bad but we aren’t going to beat anyone shooting 36%.

Defense wasn’t great. Especially the inbounds play for a dunk and a foul.

I thought we played much better defense in the first half than what I've grown to expect with this squad. The second half though the defense started to get really lax right after we took the lead. Offensively we countered that but just chucking up some really bad shots which quickly turned our live second half lead into a term point deficit that we'd never really threaten.

This team just isn't good. And while I do have major issues with huger I don't think this group is nearly as talented individually as we keep saying either. Yeah we have a lot of players who can put up a big night here and there but we have very few that we can count on every night.

We had our chances to win but like usual we didn't take advantage of any of them. Similar shooting story to some of the non conference games for those that didn't watch.

I like Gordon compared to some of our other guards but he creates nothing off the pick and roll. Never hits the roll and didn't attack the defenders. If he got doubled he dribbled back before making a safe pass. Against one defender he goes lateral instead of attacking then makes a simple pass to the closest guy or keeps dribbling around

These are my thoughts exactly. This is not a great team. The coaching isn’t great but three good players on the floor will give you much better results. We really only have one good player.

This take that we don't have talent is a bit nuts.

Plowden is a first team all mac guy. He is very good in nearly every facet.
Gordon and Curtis is a very capable MAC back court. They can score and distribute. Gordon is fine taking control of the ball and being the man. Curtis, when on, is a great guy to attack the basket and distribute.
We have 2 very capable big men in Reece and Mattiss. They are different, and probably can't co-exist on the court despite my wishes, but they are at the very least above average starters at C.
Diggs is fine as the 5th starter. He has the size to contribute as a rebounder and is a lights out shooter when he is on.

Those should obviously be your starters at this point.
Turner (7) is a very capable backup big. He is active and can score a bit

You can win the MAC with that group. If you space the floor, move the ball and have constant effort. We have none of that.

The guard depth has fallen apart
Fulcher(8) is pretty much worthless at this point. I saw him take a terrible three and jog back down the court. When is he going to grow.
Mills(9) doesn't provide much either
Metheny(10) is hurt
O'Neil(11) is redundant with our 2 bigs now
Fields(12) is hurt
Etim(13) is redshirting
Young(14) is raw too.

Our biggest issues are
1) Coaching. The Offense doesn't allow for spacing or putting people in position to score easy baskets. The players are always on top of each other and then just jack up bad threes or as others have said...play hero ball. Plus there is no energy or effort
2) Player development. Fulcher-Young-Metheny-Mills.....Not one player is better than when they first started playing. Fulcher has all the talent in the world and it looks like he is playing at the Rec. Metheny has regressed. I have no idea what Mills is. Young is like Fulcher.
