The path to Cleveland

Post by Matty B »

Assuming we don't beat OU or West Bancroft High next week, there is but one scenario where we get to Cleveland:

BG beats WMU Saturday

Miami loses out (@TOL/@CMU/EMU)

EMU loses its other 2 games besides Miami (@BallSt/WMU)

NIU goes 1-2 or worse (@Buffalo/Kent/OU)

We would win a 3 way tie breaker between BG/EMU/Miami (or 4 way including NIU) for the 8 seed.

That's it. That's the only way we make it to Cleveland.

Couple other scenarios in play should we win 2 games, but let's not waste our time there yet.

The only way this team is going to Cleveland is if they get asked to introduce Pat Benatar into the Rock & Roll Hall of fame this year.

What a pathetic season.

I won't even be around this year to be able to make the trip, but I would love to make a weekend out of going to the MAC tournament to watch our Falcons play if they were actually going to be there.

We should be there every year and we should be winning games when we get there more often than not, given the Frack money. That feels like it should be the bare minimum acceptable level of achievement from this program.

That is absolutely the standard I expect from this program. It's why I was so upset when Huger was extended, and I grow more salty with every passing game. I'm tapping out tomorrow. I cannot plan another Saturday around this team the way they've played...we're going to go have some different family fun this Saturday.

It's funny to have such high expectations for a program that has played in 2 MAC title games in the past 20 years (losing both of them). But it's just undeniable that expectations should have gone up with the financial bonus that Mr. Frack gave us.

And man, if you ever do get a chance, just grab a hotel room in Cleveland (I love the Hyatt @ the Arcade) and get yourself an all tourney ticket with some buddies to just watch the ball games. It's fun to just soak in all the hoops, tons of good fun bars/casino to hang out at, great restaurants, etc. I have gotten old, so I haven't done it in probably 17 years or so, but when I was in my early 20s it was also a blast because there were cheerleaders, dance teams, bands, etc from all the schools out and about at those same bars/restaurants. It was like a MAC takeover of downtown Cleveland.

I took my wife to watch the BG women play in the championship game last year, and even in a COVID-y arena environment, it was still a ton of fun. Definitely planning to get out there and do the full weekend at some point.

We were actually planning to go to the semifinals and finals in 2020 before the world shut down. Here’s hoping BG find themselves back in that situation (in a spot where they could win in Cleveland) soon.

Well, we're going to be at the game tomorrow night. We've missed most of the games this year because an almost 2-year old is impossible to get to many of the games with bedtimes. We're going because he has fun seeing the mascots and eating popcorn. We play WMU, so it should also be a winnable game for us.

Cleveland March #MACtion is fun. I had a great time watching the Bowling Green women win a MAC title in one of their runs to Cleveland. It was a pretty good crowd.

Also, as others have said, there is plenty to do in downtown Cleveland.

Because we're paying our coaches among the most in the MAC, it's fair to expect among the best coaching in the conference.

We're also financially equipped to have one of the highest recruiting budgets in the MAC, it is fair to expect these better coaches to find better talent.

We are also in a position to play a better OOC schedule, which should a) better prepare us for conference play and b) build a post season resume if we ever actually won our conference

All these things are fair. Ignoring the fact that we have by far the most private money in our basketball program is folly. Just because the current administration doesn't have a clue how to spend it doesn't mean the expectations shouldn't be there.

Further if bill Frack didn't believe his money could make a difference then he never would have gifted it. That was the whole effing point of his donation.

If I win the lottery I'm buying BGSU basketball.

That's fair. If we are paying our coaching staff more, we should have higher expectations. I didn't realize that was part of where the Frack money was going.

Really?...I tend to agree with him on most things...I thought...but...maybe the perception is different. I knw we didn't agree on the mass formation psych....I mean COVID response...but 10 people will tell you 10 things on that

Man.. had we just beat western we'd be in good shape to get to Cleveland. Now we need to win at the blue weiner building on Douglas Ave AND have one of Miami or Central lose on Friday night..

We're gonna get screwed by Central not playing all their games due to COVID or whatever.
