I'm intrigued by the fact that the Blade has done two stories in recent weeks about the Athletic Department's use of donated funds. Is this a prelude to a larger expose about the department...or a mere coincidence?

The interesting part is the “athletic department” has not been able to raise much $$$$, but people have come forward like the baseball alumni and Haas to donate. Our athletic development is a joke, because they have the wrong people asking for the wrong reasons, and upsetting more people than they are getting hemp from.

Nobody wants to give money to people they don't trust. There is a lot of damage done to the relationship between the department and the donating alumni base. Until they figure out how to repair that (everybody is watching what's happening with the Frack money), things are going to remain stagnate. Reading that article, it's not just a problem with the AD. An entire house cleaning is a necessary first step.

ABSO-FREAKING-LUTELY

I'm not wealthy. Not in the least. Barring a lottery victory I would never donate enough money to move a needle at all, and sure as hell never donate enough money to get an audience with the AD or president of the U as Mr. Haas did.

That all being said, you know my current and expected future donation level? $0. PERIOD. I am not giving a penny to this athletic department when they cannot properly utilize the funds from the major donors. If they won't put Mr. Frack's money towards improving our basketball product/scheduling (as intended) and they won't put Mr. Haas's money towards facility improvements (as intended) why would I trust them to put my couple hundred bucks I might donate to the basketball team?

I have zero faith in Moos or anybody else in that department. And this is NOT solely about winning/losing/hiring coaches. This is about the way the department operates. Until they start doing things to earn our trust, I'm simply not giving them any money. They'll get my ticket revenue and concession bucks so long as we deem it a viable form of winter entertainment. Even that is, at this point, a bit of a stretch, so we'll see.

It seems the obvious solution is to make changeS at the top of the department. Things will not be different until that happens.

And I fully believe that newcomer should A) have little to no attachment to BG, and B) have carte blanche to remake the entire dept in his vision

I don't necessarily have a reason to have a problem with somebody in like, say Elsasser, but the entire Dept has been so bad for so long I simply don't see a reason to be keep around leadership people who have been around for decades. They need to bring in somebody that has experience in successful athletic depts and can bring a vision here. The way BG has operated for so long is simply unacceptable.

He's been there for 4? ADs, maybe more. I remember him being involved in hockey games back in the late 90s. I have nothing personally against the guy, but I think the biggest step to rebuilding the trust with donors is a complete house cleaning. Top to bottom, every AD employee with the power to make a decision. They need to get rid of the "this is how things have always been done" people. It's not going to be an easy thing to do either. I don't think this is anything new under just this AD. And unless the AD is a serious micro-manager, this cannot be allowed to fall solely on his shoulders. It runs much deeper than the top guy alone.

Sounds about right for BG athletics.
This doesn't need to turn into an individual bash session. I don't think anyone wants that, or outright accusations not pertaining directly to donated funds to the university. There are problems that run deep in the department. Mishandling the donations, and the subsequent distrust from alumni, is excuse enough to rectify many more problems that exist.

The person who was the micro manager of the group was Hughes. It's less than surprising that the past 6 plus years are beginning to surface soon after his departure.

The person I feel bad for in this whole process is Coach Hallock. Young coach with a lot of energy has taken a job that seems to be a monumental taste of turning things around.

1) Trying to convince recruits to come to BG when the University won't fully back the program - NOT GOOD

2) Falling behind others in your league facility wise - NOT GOOD

3) Your biggest donor was chased off and now giving to your rival up north - NOT GOOD

4) Competitiveness of the team is being seen by all - NOT GOOD

As a huge supporter of the this program, it's sad what the program has to work with. The obstacles they have to overcome to even put a product on the field is pathetic on the Athletic Department.

Those would be program-changing actions. Huge news if they ever come to fruition.
