Offseason 2022
Re: Offseason 2022
My preference would be Ford. Very fiery guy, was the defensive coordinator for the top defensive team in the MAC. Obvious coaching roots in his family. Gets the MAC as well as anyone. Seems like a slam dunk.

Re: Offseason 2022
The only probable "cause" likely would have to do with the dismissal of Reece and Gordon. If the Blade article is more true than false, that could be enough.Schadenfreude wrote: ↑Wed Mar 16, 2022 10:09 amI literally LOLed.
More seriously: I'm not seeing cause here.

What about Lamont Paris? Findlay native, College of Wooster grad, longtime Akron assistant, Wisconsin assistant. Currently the head coach at Chattanooga, where they won the SoCon and made the NCAA tourney. This guy obviously has ties to the area, the MAC and would probably be able to recruit Ohio like he did at Akron and Wisconson. He would run Bo Ryan's swing offense most likely (which is preferable over the Huger no offense). I'd hire him today. He only makes $250,000 at Chattanooga so I think he would take the job.

Awesome...my list is ignorant at best but I would love to try to nab a guy like that. I would bet he gets a chance at a higher level.JohnFloyd4Life wrote: ↑Wed Mar 16, 2022 8:36 pm What about Lamont Paris? I don't really follow these sorts of things at all, but he seems like an absolutely perfect resume to me from your writeup. Local ties, D1 experience and success. MAC experience mixed with Big10 experience.Globetrotter wrote: ↑Thu Mar 17, 2022 12:08 amAwesome...my list is ignorant at best but I would love to try to nab a guy like that. Of course we'll wait it out with Huger because this is BG basketball.
Re: Offseason 2022
The job is not open and is not likely to be open. That all said, let me express my general regret that Archie Miller is likely to take over at Rhode Island. I've long been hoping since he was let go at Indiana that somehow some way some day he would be the head coach at BG.

Re: Offseason 2022
Whenever they interview anyone, instead of hiring a search firm, they should look to hire a former successful coach as a consultant. Hopefully Moose isn’t the one making the hire, but an example would be Steve Fisher former UM/SDSU coach. Regardless someone with little to no ties with the candidates.
Make whoever is interviewing go thru an absolute gauntlet of questions with the hiring committee and this consultant covering everything. Roster building, style of play including offensive and defensive scheme , skill development, budget, leadership, and everything else under the sun. Make it difficult, figure out what the guy is all about and if he is a option. Rely on the consultant to give feedback on scheme, recruiting, etc.
I feel like BG just goes over the basics, gets the candidates from a search firm, and makes a hire. They need to really dig in and make sure they are asking difficult questions and getting clear confident responses.
Answers like “play harder, effort, etc” aren’t good enough. They need a guy who can coach and develop at this level, it’s not as hard as BG makes it look.

Re: Offseason 2022
Watch this Akron game vs UCLA. Watch Akron defend their tails off. And watch assistant Dustin Ford living and dying on every defensive possession. That's the kind of coach I want. I want that mentality in BG

Re: Offseason 2022
Another name to throw out: Luke Murray (Bill Murray’s son). Coaching experience at big and small schools, almost always on winning teams. About half his career in the Midwest and half on the East Coast. Good recruiter and coach of guards. Also wouldn’t hurt to have Bill Murray involved with the program.

Re: Offseason 2022
Dustin Ford would be an interesting choice. Has a MAC school ever hired another MAC assistant to replace their HC? I do wonder if the Frack money would allow us to get a bigger, more established coach instead of an assistant. 1968 is a long time. I would want someone who has been a successful HC before and been to the ncaa tourney. Chris Mack? While I can dream. I do think a minority coach would probably be hired given the lack of diversity among our major sports teams and administration.
Circling back on Fulcher, I’ve heard he is an awful student and may flunk out. Could possibly be a reason we never saw him start after all rookie team.
Anyone know anything on Metheny’s injury that cost him the season? Is he healthy? If not that would be another issue with this roster.

I'm not a retread fan, but what about Jim Christian? I bring him up simply because he has won at two other MAC schools as a head coach, granted Kent State and Ohio are run way better than BG

Jim Christian is a good name. John Groce is a retread. He was at OU and fired at Illinois. Now in the tourney with Akron. Christian could have the same success IMO.BGFalconfromCincy wrote: ↑Fri Mar 18, 2022 9:59 am I'm not a retread fan, but what about Jim Christian? I really like the way Chattanooga plays and have been impressed with their offensive system.
Also just saw Nelly Cummings (forgot about him) is the leading scorer for Colgate with 14.5 points per game

Re: Offseason 2022
Kent State once hired long-time Toledo assistant Jim McDonald. Toledo's coach at the time was Bobby Nichols. This hire was the beginning of the ascention of KSU's basketball program.
