Perhaps, but he could coach. I was completely on board with moving on from him after the Reverend's (and other drinking) incidents, but he could definitely coach.BillyLP wrote: ↑Thu Mar 04, 2021 3:54 pmThe problem with Jans (aside from being handsy) was that the whole team hated him and about half were going to transfer out before he got fired anyway. He was a mini-Gregg Marshall without the resume back then.hammb wrote: ↑Thu Mar 04, 2021 3:42 pm Yeah, Huger scheduled his way to back to back 20 win seasons. He's still a meh 102-85 overall, and only 53-55 in MAC play. These numbers look good compared to Orr, but given our facility and our endowment this is not nearly good enough. Jans showed you how easily a GOOD coach can come in here and win right away. At no point in the 6 years here has Huger's team ever looked as well coached as Jans team did in his 1 season.
As to the players hating him and wanting to transfer, I'm not certain that was a bad thing, although I'm generally not at all a fan of hardass coaches who treat players like crap. In the case of that roster, however, there weren't really any players with eligibility remaining who were worth retaining anyhow. Perhaps it was him trying to clean house a la Urban Meyer, dunno. It's also not hard to imagine that any actual coaching whatsoever would seem overbearing compared to the Louis Orr, "Let god be the glory" experience.
Jans has gone on to be pretty damned successful as a HC, at the very least he must have learned how to treat players or he wouldn't be winning 25 games every year at NMSU (although this year doesn't look real good for them).
