2022-2023 Season

Post by bgbill »

I was told by a reliable source that BG's nonconference games will include home-and homes with Michigan State, Ohio State, and Western Michigan, and RPI will be coming to BG. Good results against Western and OSU should help our power ranking.
Very comfortable games travel-wise, no overnights (for fans, anyway).
All is for the best in this best of all possible worlds.

I’d be thrilled if this comes to fruition. The RPI return trip makes sense, and the home/home series all should be great for attendance. And because they’re close geographically, our local fans can realistically go to the road games, as well.

Great non-conference schedule if so.

That would be 19 home games.

I remember years ago Berge saying getting a home and home with MSU was virtually impossible. Glad Ty was able to pull it off.

Are you aware of what has happened to that program lately? BG giving the home and home was probably Ty being nice.

If they are able to go 6-2 with that schedule, 3rd in the league should be on the tournament bubble.

Sweep RPI, sweep Sparty, splits with the horseys and THE f-nuts gets us to 6-2. Not sure about that. Western has new goalies and lost a lot of firepower but they still return enough guys to be 4th or 5th in the Nachos. Not sure where TOSU will end up. Not sure where we'll end up.

I thought Berge was referring to the skunks on the home-and-home challenges (they wanted and still want 2-for-1's). We did a home-and-home with Sparty pre-pandemic in 2017. Maybe I have that wrong.

Far too early to put records on things. WMU is due to take a step back as mentioned above, but they'll still be a tough challenge. MSU has had it's fair share of issues but Nightengale will get things straightened out there pretty quickly. Buckeyes will have a decent team. RPI lost their top scorer to the portal.

I thought he was talking about both Michigan schools. I could certainly be wrong.

Berge mentioned this at the final year they did the coaches caravan tour around the state. Michigan State's perception around college hockey has changed though in the last five years. My best guess is most bigger name opponents wouldn't be interested in playing them as it would be a high risk, low reward situation given their record lately.

Wow. Sparty! It's been a few years since we had them in the building. Love to see it.

MSU is a coaching scheme away from being decent. They have some draft picks that haven't really done anything. The potential is there, just need someone to find it. Hopefully get them early. Western didn't rely on the goalie to stand on his head and steal games. They will probably have a bit of a regression. 4th in the Nachos is most likely still a tournament team, with 5th being on the bubble. The Nuts are about as unpredictable as they come.

Being able to go 3-1 against the Big and 2-0 against the ECAC is key as it gives the entire CCHA a leg up on those conferences.

Something will happen with these non-leagues that will cause us to say "WHY"

Great example is Ohio State agreed to play us last year then opted for their home game to be on a Thursday (work night for most) causing fewer Falcon fans to travel, knowing on a Friday at BG their fans will travel to BG, causing about a 60/40 split in fanfare for a BG home game. Don't be surprised if these shenanigans take place again with bigger schools.

Meh. Hockey is the only sport left where BG can get a home game against a B1G school. I honestly think the B1G would like to see that change, but the landscape of college hockey isn't there yet. So long as we're getting at least split series against regional non-conference opponents, I'm happy with it, even if it's a Thursday/Friday series.

BTW, Dylan St. Cyr transferred to Michigan State yesterday so things are already starting to look up there. He's arguably a top-10 goaltender in college hockey.
