Surprise GOOD ranking

Post by lookimrory »

Thought you guys would enjoy. Back in February ESPN+ had an article listing BGSU as #1 in the nation in returning production. Today he came out with post transfer/signing day rankings.
BG is 99th, good for 6th in the MAC and 2nd in the east.
Toledo is 1st in the MAC at 60. Miami is 84 and Akron is worst at 126.
OOC opponents, UCLA 41, Miss St 15, Marshall 63.
Found it interesting, but I've been in the camp that this team will outplay expectations this year. I guess we'll see.

Being ranked 99th is a good ranking....SL has demolished our standards and expectations

No that is just the MAC. These days you are lucky to be considered a top 80 team if you play in the MAC unless you are WMU or NIU going 12-0. I have no clue at all what anybody sees in a UT team that got it asses absolutely handed to them by an undermanned MTSU team.

I guess I should’ve specified that the good is being 6th in the mac and especially 2nd in the east. That’s an absolute tremendous improvement if it comes to fruition and will have us flirting with a bowl season.

Agree. Second place in the East would be progress.

I also agree with others who would not be satisfied with 99th-best in the country.

I think this 2022 team will be better than before. I'm glad I'm not alone in thinking that.

"Better than before" is an awfully low bar to clear in this case. I don't see middle of the pack in what is arguably the worst conference in "major" college football heading into year four of a coaching change as being anything worth celebrating.

I'm still mystified as to how we came to hire a career assistant with mediocre (at best) results at every stop to be our head coach

Seems like the expectations have lowered. This is year 4, SL is supposed to be winning the Mac in year 5 right?

Seems like that was the plan he laid out.

I guess we’ll see if we take a step towards that goal this fall. I have some optimism that we’ll be fielding a pretty competitive team this year, but we won’t know until September/October hit. I don’t have high hopes for winning in the non-conference games against the P5 schools, but I expect us to be competitive in every game outside of those, and especially in MAC play.

Finishing second in the East would be consistent with the timetable Coach Loffler has laid out. Dave Clawson finished second in in the East in his Year 4.

I don't think expectations have been lowered. As mbenecke said, we will learn a lot this fall. I agree with him that this team will be better, but we also know it's a tough schedule. So we'll see.

Clawson's 4th year team finished 2nd in the relatively weak east to Dri Archer and the Kent State Golden Flashes team that finished the year 11-3, That team was 6-2 in the MAC. I don't see this team winning six games in the MAC.

These nonsensical comparisons to Dave Clawson have to stop....SL has none of his achievements on his resume. Nothing suggests that he is anywhere near as talented as Clawson

What in the world does what clawson did in 2012 have to do with anything anyways. If you want to compare him to Clawson, clawson stacked a bunch of talented skill players together and a QB that was a stud. Don’t see much of any comparison on offense. Defense I see some similarities but little of what’s happened in the past 3 years passes the eye test for me.

The offense is doomed to mediocrity at its very best. It is predicated on mismatches. So, the WR, Slots , TE and RBs all are required to know ALL the plays for ALL the positions. At any time their package might be sent in to run x play. The only way it works is if someone in the box spots it, the set gets run out (before the clock expires), and the play is executed. The QB is required to be able to time-up with anyone at anytime. Missed assignments abound.

What you will never see is a stud RB or WR being fed the ball week in and out. How does a QB (or #2) get reps and on the same page with the top 2-3 of every position in all of those plays? They don’t.

I’ve heard SL say more than once he wouldn’t have run a play if he knew who was out there. I know first hand it happens every game. SL Is too smart for himself and this offense has and will continue to fail. Wait till we don’t have a QB with 7 years in the system…..

Fans (and the AD) are in the worst possible place….. a Coach that does most everything right, except game planning/coaching.
It’s not my point of view, it’s a fact.
