2021-2022 Recruiting
Re: 2021-2022 Recruiting
Maybe, but if you think the defense was bad last year, that lineup will be considerably worse defensively, unless major improvement is made by multiple players.
Re: 2021-2022 Recruiting
My biggest worry is we lost 4 of our top 5 scorers and our defense wasn't good last year.
Hard to tell from stats but are any of the newcomers suppose to be defensive players? Agee, Lightfoot, ayers, and the return/development of metheny will hopefully offset the scoring losses.
I think there are some exciting newcomers but as a team I'm worried

Re: 2021-2022 Recruiting
1 Metheny 5-11 Jr/So 6.2p 2.8a 21.6(3%) 24.7m Lightfoot 6-0 R
2 Curtis 6-4 SR 9.5p 3r 3.1a 33(3%) 22.5m Mills 6-3 Jr 4.4p 21.9(3%) 20.9m
3 Ayers 6-5 Sr 10p 26.5(3%) 26.1m McComb 6-3 R
4 Turner 6-7 Sr/Jr 6.6p 3.6r 37.5(3%) 17.8m Felt 6-9 R Towns 6-9 Jr Xfer
5 Agee 6-8 Jr/So 20.1pg 11.5rpg 35(3%) O'Neal 6-7 SR 3.5p 9.5m Etim 6-8 Fr Diarra 6-10 Jr Xfer
I am going to do a run down......feel free to note how stupid I am
1. Curtis 6-4 SR 9.5p 3r 3.1a 33(3%) 22.5m
I think Curtis starts 100%. He started 24/30 last year so I think that's not an outlier. With his size he can play up and down the wing spots. He averaged 12.4pts over the last 10 games with 3.1apg and 3rpg over the year. He was my most pleasant surprise last year as he was much more of a facilitator than I had originally thought
2. Metheny 5-11 Jr/So 6.2p 2.8a 21.6(3%) 24.7m
Metheny probably starts. Although he is much maligned he pushes the ball well and has great control. He has a great shot that hasn't been translating. His size is a detriment but I think he can get past that with 2 other big wings. He has started every game of his career (36/36) and I think that continues.
3 Turner 6-7 Sr/Jr 6.6p 3.6r 37.5(3%) 17.8m
Turner is probably the most likely 3rd starter settling in at the PF spot. He doesn't have great lateral quickness but his motor is non stop and he improved his 3pt% tremendously last year. He is an easy fan favorite because he finds a way to do everything ok. I don't think he will rise up to a star level but every team needs that glue guy to hit a big shot and dive for a loose ball.
4 Ayers 6-5 Sr 10p 26.5(3%) 26.1m
This is where I think the questions start coming. I would start Ayers but the team might start Mills. Ayers is technically our top returning scorer. He averaged 10ppg last year at Duquesne and 12.2ppg the year before at Mercer. He shote 26.5% from 3 last year down from 39% at Mercer. He was a decent rebounder for a wing with 4rpg last year and 3.8 the year before. This team will need scoring and I think he can do that.
Here is his tape against us: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MD_bWTBK_Vw. He put up 20 points
5 Agee 6-8 Jr/So 20.1pg 11.5rpg 35(3%)
Agee is probably my most favorite of the additions. You never know how a Juco will truly translate but he seems active and athletic. 20.1ppg, 11,5rpg, 35% on 102 3s, 1bpg 1.45spg, 2apg, in Juco last year. I think he is a good 5 but how big is he actually? At 6-8 with hops and long arms you can play center in the MAC
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZCEGG-YeXk
BENCH
6 Mills 6-3 Jr 4.4p 21.9(3%) 20.9m
Mills started 23 games but I can't imagine that is set in stone after his production dipped severely from 2021 at Binghamton. He is another bounce back candidate and likely the top backup at the 2 and 3.
-----------------------------------------
7 Felt 6-9 R
I am going with Felt here but am truly perplexed with how the roster shapes up outside of those top 6 IMO. I want to love Felt. I want to believe he is a stud athlete who can impact the game in the post. I am confused what happened to his last year. It doesn't look like you can find tape but you can find tape of his team where he isn't playing? I don't understand.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rkze0_WgV9U
He is sloppily uber athletic and has some upside. Probably the top backup at both PF and C
8 Lightfoot 6-0 R
I am riding the wave with the momentum from others here who are high on Lightfoot. I didn't see it right away but he was signed early and could obviously develop. And digging into the videos he is nasty. He will be the backup PG without question and push for time.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So here is the rotation so far
1 Metheny 5-11 Jr/So 6.2p 2.8a 21.6(3%) 24.7m Lightfoot 6-0 R
2 Curtis 6-4 SR 9.5p 3r 3.1a 33(3%) 22.5m Mills 6-3 Jr 4.4p 21.9(3%) 20.9m
3 Ayers 6-5 Sr 10p 26.5(3%) 26.1m
4 Turner 6-7 Sr/Jr 6.6p 3.6r 37.5(3%) 17.8m Felt 6-9 R
5 Agee 6-8 Jr/So 20.1pg 11.5rpg 35(3%)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Then we have about 5 guys I am not sure deserve D1 scholarships
9 Towns 6-9 Jr Xfer 2 starts, 27 games, 2.1ppg, 2.5rpg
Of the 5 he looks like the most competent to add minutes. Didn't breakthrough at OU at all.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2lIKP5iNvA
https://www.thehoophustle.com/samtowns
10 O'Neal 6-7 SR 3.5p 9.5m
O'Neal battled some last year and played a decent in limited minutes. I don't hate him as a big that plays inconsistent minutes that annoys the other team because of his girth and bruising style.
11 McComb 6-3 R
24 pts as a senior in Dayton can't be ignored. But in videos he doesn't look athletic enough to be anything special.
https://www.maxpreps.com/athlete/anthon ... 5024940bca
12 Diarra 6-10 Jr Xfer
We will be his 4th spot in 4 years and he hasn't produced at any of them....including a Juco stop. Limited athlete with great size.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1Bhv8Yezns
13 Etim 6-8 Fr
His health will be a big question. Looks like he can be a rotational big at some point

My only pushback, Globe: I think Metheny moves behind Lightfoot and Mills this season and ends up as a 3rd person off the bench.

I don't understand what Mills brings to the table. He doesn't set others up. Doesn't score remotely efficiently. Doesn't rebound. He's not long or fast enough to be much of a positive on defense. Why is he playing? If he was shooting 35% from three and taking 6 a game Icould see it. But as is I do not understand why he's on the court if we have other options at all.

I know - right? I was excited to have a competent guard playing for us. And it seemed like he was generally trying to do reasonable stuff out there. Took good shots. Didn't over dribble or try stupid flashy stuff that just gave the other team two points. Like, what he TRIED to do seemed solid. But my god he couldn't shoot. And if you are going to play that conservatively and create nothing, you NEED to be able to shoot.Globetrotter wrote: ↑Sat Jul 02, 2022 4:15 pmHis numbers look great the year before he joins us....for whatever that's worthDiemilkweed wrote: ↑Fri Jul 01, 2022 11:56 am I don't understand what Mills brings to the table. When Huger came to us he was flashy and exciting. By his senior year his turnovers were down a lot, but so was all the joy and excitement in his game. He got more conservative, not better. And that seems to be what happened to most of Larrinaga's players.>It's funny, because \Plowden 100% simply got better. And Diggs was most surely trying stuff in games with ballhandling and passing that he wasn't quite up to. But Mills, so me, played a very uptight game.

Elsasser doesn't pick his playing time and it's not his fault. But it doesn't mean it's any less frustrating when he comes into the game. This nonsense doesn't happen at other schools

If you mean walk ons are walk ons because of connections....thats incorrect.
If you mean walk ons play when they shouldn't....I agree. But for a walk on he hasn't been terrible.

Re: 2021-2022 Recruiting
Agreed. He’s a good kid, but he shouldn’t be getting regular minutes. He shouldn’t be in the rotation. It’s a bit of an indictment of the coaching staff that we haven’t built a roster that can avoid playing a walk-on most nights.Globetrotter wrote: ↑Wed Jul 06, 2022 5:30 pm If you mean walk ons are walk ons because of connections....thats incorrect.

Right now, he is part of the staff that is getting the job done at OSU. They had the 8th best class last year and are rated 4th this year. He's only been there as a coach for three seasons.
Ohio State hasn't recruited this well in back-to-back seasons for a long time, and it's not unrealistic to think Diebler has had a significant hand in this. In fact, when Devin Royal (no. 61 nationally) committed to OSU a few weeks back, he specifically mentioned Diebler's role in securing his commitment.
