I gotta disagree man. This age group in general is way too entitled, I see it with interns at our company all the time. If the internship or job opportunity isn’t perfect or in a warm climate they throw a fit and leave. For athletes, if the scheme isn’t good enough, or if the coach isn’t cool enough they’ll just bounce to the next place. Since when did putting your head down, putting hard work in and leading by example become a bad thing?
Grinding it out has never been a bad thing, and it’s certainly admirable when someone is willing to work hard and get the results they want.

However, this group of kids also understands that they have the ability to walk away if they feel they are being mistreated or they’re in an unfavorable environment. Times are changing, and people aren’t as willing to put themselves through bad things when they don’t have to… so they choose not to.

It’s not a bad thing that people are choosing to change their situation if it’ll be better for them, just like it’s not a bad thing when people decide to stick it out and grind. All just a matter of what people will feel is best for them, so I don’t judge anyone too much for whatever they choose to do.

Usually...you have five years to play four. It's a limited window in a pretty limited pool of gigs. Work analogies don't really fit...

Sometimes hanging in there smart...sometimes it isn't. To exercise your right to weigh your options and plot your own course shouldn't be viewed as amoral failing

I like the work analogy. Change jobs once, and who knows what happened there, right? Maybe the boss was a lunatic. Maybe it was just a bad fit.

But change jobs three times in five years? if I'm hiring, I'm going to wonder if this guy is a good worker.

Marriage also comes to mind.

Get divorced once? Who knows what happened there, right? Maybe it was her, maybe it was him. Mistakes happen.

But get divorced three times? People will quite reasonably start asking tougher questions.

Poor analogies...marriage is a lifetime commitment. Your lifespan in the workforce is upwards of 30-40 years. College football career is five..in Doege's case six...to play four or five with Covid.

Completely different timelines...comparisons made by a person from a completely different era. Nowadays...changing jobs three times in five years wouldn't be the disqualifier it was 25 years ago. Hell for me it wasn't a disqualifier at all. I worked for three different companies in the same space, selling to the same clients from Feb 1998 to April 1999 and beyond. Each time I moved I got a nice bump in $$$ and a smaller geographic area to work in.

People still THINK this way? IF you're a hiring a manager you better start erasing this thought process from your brain pretty quick. Unless you just want to hire people who are happy to languish in the same role for 20 yrs with no ambition.

I've changed jobs 3 times in the last 5 years and had damned good reasons for it every time. Going back further I've changed jobs 5 times in the last 11 years, and again had damned good reasons for doing so every time. My salary now is nearly double what it was in that gig 11 years ago, and if I were still working there I'd A) be making FAR less, or B) out of a job because that company has been acquired twice in the interim.

If you're employed anywhere and not looking and either changing jobs (or leveraging opportunities) frequently you're probably getting screwed. In my career I've progressed towards two things: More money and more autonomy/flexibility. Right now I'm in a role where I have both, but 2 years from now? Who knows, I may have to make another change.

The days of taking a job at 20 and working there til retirement are gone. Your employer has zero loyalty to you or anybody else, there is no reason for you to have loyalty to them. The same is VERY true in college football. Get yours, young men, get yours.

Yes to most companies you are an employee number and since we’re you using analogies if you’re a QB you’re probably nothing more than a number on a depth chart.

I change jobs frequently. SF wouldn’t hire me, but I’m good with that.

Remember when Loeffler came in here guns a blazin' about NOT using the transfer portal? This board couldn't get enough of that rhetoric. It was Dave Clawson 2.0. The version without winning or actually good job performance. It was 2.0, in hopes of getting Kit Hughes back to Boston. 0-5 and losing by 35ppg quickly changed his 90's style (Lloyd Carr) Michigan approach to the transfer portal.

You are on target, but in his defense (and those of us you mention) the transfer portal has evolved exponentially since he arrived. And the transfer talent available is far from College of the Canyons, El Camino College and other bottom feeders, as it was. Personally, I think MAC level HS talent is now left on the table for the taking, with everyone trolling the portal.

Little bit of revisionist history by guest. 2019 transfer rules still required players to sit out a year absent a waiver. That season is when things started changing after the NCAA approved a ton of waivers and then started cracking down late. It's why Darius Wade had to be plucked from Home Depot to play QB since McDonald had his waiver denied. Building through your recruiting classes was still the preferred method.

One of the position coaches expressed frustration on Saturday about the lack of leadership from the NCAA to get all this under control. You're asking coaches to pretty much play the role of GM and go out and fill gaps every year. It's great there is going to be more talent available, but the pendulum is going to swing both ways. Kids recruited by the lower conferences are going to jump ship after a good season and try to hook onto a power conference team. That coach is fearful that especially at the lower levels you're going to see an inability to sustain year over year success with a constant shuffling of the deck.
The longer the walk, the farther you crawl.

The portal really became a thing going into last season...Loeffler claims he eschewed it to be Dave Clawson...even though he could have won a bazillion games...in favor of doing it the "right way". He has since embraced the portal as a means of plugging holes in the OL and at QB. That abrupt about face is one of the reasons I m so not sold on Loeffler. Rather than admit the transfer portal could have been better utilized, he crashed into a wall and said "I meant to do that".

I think roguewarrior alluded to something important...HS kids that might have been discovered by coaches getting out there and working an area re going to be overlooked now because it's easier to find guys in the portal.

I think this becomes less of an issue in the future when the COVID affected players start phasing out. Right now there are still what 6 or 7 full HS graduating classes that are eligible to play college football? Eventually that will fade back to the 5 HS classes eligible. And with the participation numbers for HS football continuing to decline the total talent pool will continue to decrease.

Yes, there will likely continue to be more movement within the college ranks. The best G5 players moving up to P5 and the lesser P5 players dropping down to G5. I think it's equally as likely that HS players that could've gone P5 get pushed out by upward transfers (and thus end up at G5 schools) as it is kids that were destined for the G5 to be entirely missed.

If anything I suspect we'll see more opportunities for HS kids as more guys enter the transfer portal (giving up their scholarships) and don't find another D1 home. Again, none of this will happen until the COVID players are gone.

In short order… poof , the Covid players will be gone, and the roster will be upside down once again. I think it would be wise to start focusing on loading up on HS players 2023 and beyond, and grabbing gems that are passed over by the portal trend. I would use the portal to cover injuries and recruiting mistakes.

Please forward your resume to whoever is in charge at BGSU right now...

Re moving around a lot...brings to mind a favorite employment meme..."everybody has to eat some s**t now and then...do not develop a taste for it"

Orth looked pretty ordinary at Saturday's scrimmage. Had one good deep ball to Embry. Other than that a lot of accuracy issues.
