Lobbing softball questions isn't reporting the news. There was a time when reporters were asking hard questions and reporting the answers. Now, it's all about "access." The media is afraid to ask the hard questions for fear they will no longer have "access." And that's not exclusive to BGSU sports.Schadenfreude wrote: ↑Thu Sep 15, 2022 11:58 am
A question along those lines isn't completely unreasonable. "Coach, this doesn't look like a bowl team right now. Are you disappointed you haven't made more progress in your fourth year?" But the media's job isn't to embarrass people at news conferences. It's to get to the bottom of what happening and report the news.

Re: BG is ranked again.......in ESPN's Bottom 10
Schad...is Loeffler your uncle or something? From day one...all he has done is point fingers at previous coaches, the NCAA and his own team. He has stubbornly held to an offense that CLEARLY is not working. He's had the nerve to compare himself to one of the best coaches in BGSU history, Dave Clawson...when he has none of the success or acumen Clawson has. After losing to an FCS team, he tries to paint a smiley face on it and compounds the travesty by incorrectly citing the history of the last title winner. And you're vexed because I pointed out that he has trouble changing pillow cases?
It's not the media's job to fix Falcon football...it's their job to cover the team and ask questions that their consumers want answered. They aren't doing that. They deserve to be criticized for not asking him tough questions.
It's not my job to fix Falcon football...it's his job and he has failed at it to an extent seldom seen in these parts. It's my job as a fan to express my frustration at his fake news approach to coaching. Sad....

jpfalcon09 didn't say "tough questions" and I don't oppose tough questions. (I even suggested one.) But jpfalcon09, who I respect a lot, called on media to embarrass the guy. To me that sounds like vengeance -- seeking emotional satisfaction by humiliating a man who has given his heart and soul to this football program for four years, but for whatever reason hasn't been able to turn it around.pdt1081 wrote: ↑Thu Sep 15, 2022 12:48 pmLobbing softball questions isn't reporting the news. Vengeance seems a theme to the posts here this week. I'm not sure vengeance has much to do with turning around the football team. And no question from the media, no matter how tough, changes the fact that this football team probably isn't going to make a bowl game.
I understand the anger. In 2000, when Gary Blackney lost up at Buffalo, I'm pretty sure I suggested at the time that he should be made to walk home rather than allowed on the team bus. Thankfully, the athletic director at the time, Paul Krebs handled it with a lot more class than that. Within days, Blackney announced he would be leaving when the season was over. That left a ton of time to find a good replacement, and Krebs chose well.
If we had an athletic director right now, I imagine he'd be talking with Loeffler right now about possible exit strategies and looking for a new guy. I sure hope we can get a good athletic director in place soon.

I completely agree with the take above about those that trumpet how hard/long they work…… was it Andy Reid that mandated his coaches go home and not miss family things? Those that stay up all night studying don’t fare as well as the prepared; who put the work down at 7PM and went to bed.
It’s not my point of view, it’s a fact.
Re: BG is ranked again.......in ESPN's Bottom 10
We don't have an athletic director because the previous one let his assistant run the deaprtment, and because he allowed that assistant to hire Scot Loeffler. The order of termination will go Moosbrugger, Loeffler, Huger. The order should have gone Hughes (in roughly 2017-2018 based on his actions), Moosbrugger, Huger, then Loeffler is never hired.

Loeffler has a bit of a martyr's complex...so it doesn't surprise me that he trumpets the long hours...it's a sympathy ploy. Vegas is against him...the NCAA is against him...the previous coaches left him in a terrible place...it's all meant to deflect criticism by engendering sympathy

Perhaps embarrass was the wrong choice of words but he needs to be held accountable for the poor performance Saturday. Instead Monday it was to deflect by pointing out useless positives and speaking falsely about the 2015 team, and then acting like he had been part of that staff. I'd have more respect today for him if he had bluntly come out and said it was unacceptable to lose at home to an FCS opponent regardless of who it is, end of story.Schadenfreude wrote: ↑Thu Sep 15, 2022 1:18 pmjpfalcon09 didn't say "tough questions" and I don't oppose tough questions. Not in his DNA JP09. This is how you tread water and last for 25 years being mediocre in his profession.jpfalcon09 wrote: ↑Thu Sep 15, 2022 3:13 pmPerhaps embarrass was the wrong choice of words but he needs to be held accountable for the poor performance Saturday. Obviously, tough questions should be allowed and expected when the team you coach sucks year after year. I personally find Scot Loeffler's personality and penchant for deflecting everything onto others ridiculously annoying. My annoyance at his answers is simply compounding the fact that we have a 25 year coaching resume of crap to know this guy can't coach yet we hired him. It also really sucks to be sitting here on the 15th of September and already writing off the entire season, although it's not really surprising.
So frustrating all around, but I think he has to know he's dead man walking. BG doesn't fire an Athletic Director to saddle a new AD with a 4 year tenured football coach and a winning percentage under .250
Huger, by virtue of being only mediocre instead of god awful, is going to keep getting contract extensions just because he isn't the crappiest coach on payroll.

With a new AD coming, don't you think his seat just got a whole lot warmer?
I've never met him.
Re: BG is ranked again.......in ESPN's Bottom 10
I would have to think so, but to be honest I just don't believe the dept can afford to buy out an AD, a football coach, and a basketball coach all in the same year.Schadenfreude wrote: ↑Thu Sep 15, 2022 5:31 pmWith a new AD coming, don't you think his seat just got a whole lot warmer?
And Huger isn't in the same class as Loeffler. He has had some (limited) successes. Although another year as bad as last year could change that appearance.

I think the University is going to want to fix football before taking on basketball and...probably...hockey

Eigner is probably the safest of the three but he needs results this season. Hockey will have the best roster since 2018-19. Huger simply by a matter of cost is probably safe until the back end of the 2023-24 year. The focus will be getting football right and then making changes to the athletic department as a whole before any other sports are touched.
The longer the walk, the farther you crawl.
