The Mysterious Case of Coach Loeffler and The Shocking Upsets!

Post by ZuluWarrior »

In 2019, 2021 and 2022 Coach Loeffler and the team have pulled off truly shocking upsets in each of those seasons. Toledo, Minnesota and now Marshall that can confound the senses. I’m pulling for Coach and the tram to get at least five more wins this season!

To have three of those levels of upsets with struggling teams is very strange.

It would be nice if BG could qualify to be Bowl eligible!

He has 8 wins. 37.5% are shock upsets. I'm not sure I've ever seen a percentage like that.

I’d say it’s luck. Some good bounces of the ball, the wind, the refs, one missed tackle, etc to win those games, and lose to bottom feeders.
It’s not my point of view, it’s a fact.

Bingo.

Think of it mathematically. When you're a large underdog in nearly every game you play it's likely the few wins you eke out here & there will be "shocking upsets".

It's a combination of the luck that roguewarrior mentioned, the fact that every single opponent we play is going to waltz into the game expecting to roll over us, and the fact that every once in awhile the group shows some fight and catches those guys off guard.

Yesterday's game, for example, was a great victory and we played reasonably well. Still we were outgained by 170 yards and needed insane turnover luck to pull out a 3 point victory. Every once in awhile that luck (the football gods, if you will) will shine down on us and we'll be surprised with a victory. Until we can build on it and show some ability to play at a higher level on a weekly basis it's meaningless.

You make your own "luck" in sports, which to me always comes down to out executing your opponent. Let's not act like Laborn magically kicked the ball twice in the red zone. Those were forced turnovers. There's a ton of credit owed to the players who made those turnovers happen. Luck kind of diminishes that.

I'd attribute it more to streakyness. Football is becoming like basketball and hockey now where teams kind of take sections of the game over. We've seen it the last two weeks where BG has rattled off 21 unanswered points through a combination of good defense and executing on offense.

Outside of the major powers, the rest of college football is becoming the NFL. Anyone can win. Just gotta be better than the dude lining up across from you.

When I say luck, it’s not “they got lucky”…. There is no “reason” that you can bottle for beating teams you shouldn’t, and losing to others. The team wins it or the team loses it.

They won the game yesterday and should be applauded for it , despite our general dislike of the current regime.

This game won’t mean much if they go 3-9 or 4-8. If they can build off a good win which they have failed to do in past seasons they can win 6 or 7 games.

It’s supposed to be in the mid 90s all week down here so I hope they prepare better for that then they did in their first game.
