Huh, I always thought it was we weren't invited and that Berge and crew were upset Miami left us behind.

We're both correct, it's two separate incidents. When the Nacho's were forming we weren't invited and Berge was irked that Rico didn't come clean about what was going on and how we were being kicked to the curb. I was referring to the time when, years later, both Mankato and ASU submitted applications to join the Nachos. The Nachos then came to us asking if we'd submit an application ostensibly to be brought in with Mankato.

BG was asked to apply and declined. It was the right decision and continues to be. You look at a program like Colorado College who has been in the cellar since the NCHC's inception and can't help but think BG would have suffered a similar fate. BG rarely ends up recruiting NHL caliber talent, facing teams on the regular with loaded lineups of prospects would have been awful.

My feeling is Miami gets out eventually. Easy to justify the expenses when your program is successful. They continue to stink it up and bus rides vs. plane trips looks better all the time. For reference, Miami spent almost $2.8 million in expenses for hockey in 2020-21. They won a whopping five games. $560K per win isn't a great investment.

Not being invited at the beginning was understandable to everyone at BG. The timing was horrid with what was actually on the ice at the time. The issue was Berge's former boss, and friend, didn't pick up the phone and give him a heads up as to what was happening. Berge and staff found out the same way as the rest of the general public.

But it also means pride tucking tail and admitting they made mistakes. I don't think Berge is "too big" to admit it, but he also wasn't involved in the initial decision, and knows the fastest way back to relevance is not being in that conference.

Seems like yet again 1, 7, and 8 are fairly easy picks while 2-6 could be switched around any which way and still make sense.

ECH and Barstool announced today they will be doing a "College Hockey Gameday" for the BG/Sparty series. Details below. Seems pretty cool.

Poll results are in. We had 21 participants which is a pretty good sample size. The group consensus is we're in for a 20-win season. Here's the breakdown of wins against each team:

Splits with Bemidji, Sparty, Tech, Buckeyes, and Western. 3-of-4 from Ferris and Rico. 2.5 wins from Lakers and Northern. Close enough to count a sweep over RPI. We finally get a win with Mankato.

With respect to finishing position, it's basically 2nd, 3rd, or 4th (with 7 people picking us for third). Nobody picked us to bring home the hardware.


As for the standings, no surprise that Mankato was the unanimous choice to repeat as league champs. 20 of 21 have Rico in last. No consensus on who finishes second, though there is a 3-way tie for third between us, Bemidji, and Tech. Interestingly enough, the difference between these three teams is miniscule and the range of finishes (denoted by the error bars) is nearly identical. So it's basically a tossup between 3 teams for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. Northern looks good for 5th, Lakers 6th, and Ferris 7th.


The only thing that surprised me is the number of people projecting us at 20 or more wins. Five of us are holding out hope for 21 wins while 4 are all in on a 23-win season. Only 4 people out of 21 are projecting 18 or fewer wins this season.

But I can’t imagine them changing things up, with Barber (C) and Dougherty (A) back from last year.
