CCHA Preseason/Media Day Thread

Post by mbenecke »

I figured I would start a thread with media day this week, and the preseason poll coming out.

The CCHA Preseason Coaches Poll was released this morning, and the results are as follows:

1. Minnesota State - 69 (6)
2. Northern Michigan - 61 (2)
3. Bowling Green - 58
4. Bemidji State - 51
5. Michigan Tech - 47
6. Lake Superior State - 45
7. Ferris State - 32
8. St. Thomas - 30

Guess we'll see right away how BG and NMU will stack up to each other.

Preseason All-CCHA Team:

F Brendan Furry, Minnesota State
F Louis Boudon, Lake Superior State
F AJ Vanderbeck, Northern Michigan

D Jake Livingstone, Minnesota State
D Elias Rosen, Bemidji State
D Jacob Bengtsson, Lake Superior State

G Blake Pietila, Michigan Tech

No Falcons. Not too much of a surprise, but I would've thought someone like Nathan Burke (16 G last year) or Taylor Schneider (30 points last year) might have enough hype going into the season to show up on a list like this.

I'm fine with this. The sum of the parts will be greater than the individual components this year. It's a deep roster especially up front.

USCHO poll is out. Mankato is 3, Tech is 20. So with three polls there are three second place finishers in the CCHA:

ECH: Mankato/BG
CCHA: Mankato/Northern
USCHO: Mankato/Tech

Northern, Bemidji, and BG are receiving votes in the USCHO poll.

He would have looked better in a BG Sweater!

Minnesota State University senior Brendan Furry has been named as the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) Preseason Player of the Year, as voted on by the conference’s eight head coaches.

A captain and forward from Toledo, Ohio, Furry helped the Mavericks to their second Frozen Four appearance in as many years and first ever trip to the finals in 2021-22. Fourth in the CCHA in scoring with 13 goals and 31 assists for 44 points in 44 games last season. His 31 helpers were good for third-most in the country, his 14 multi-point games were tops among conferences skaters and his +30 rating was good for fifth. He earned NCAA East Regional All-Tournament honors after collecting a goal and an assist for two points, helping Minnesota State advance.

Furry was second among CCHA skaters in hat tricks (1) last season, while also ranking third in assists per game (0.69), fifth in faceoff wins (355), sixth in shorthanded goals (2), seventh in assists per game (0.70) and 11th in points per game (1.00). The former Tri-City Storm and Omaha Lancers standout notched 10 power play points on four goals and six assists.

Through 72 career collegiate games, Furry has 18 goals and 39 assists for 57 points.

Yeah. His 18 assists was decent, but I expect more than 8 goals.

Swankler, Burke, Barber, Schneider. A more experienced defensive group. Lots of interesting freshman names.

We have some dudes that can produce on the roster this year. Very excited to see what they can do.
