I know a "Sooner" is someone who go the jump on claiming land during the land-rush of the late 1800's....but where did the BOOMER part come from?

You guys have been the classiest fans of any "big time" opponent we've faced. I've never been in to "big time" football, with the exception of Michigan. I'm going to follow the Sooners this season and watch you all run the table!

Boomers were settlers that actually waited until the cannon "boom" to rush into Indian Territory to claim a stake. So the state was largely settled by "Boomers" and "Sooners."

The words Boomer and Sooner both originate from the Oklahoma land rush. There were basically two types of people who showed up that day to claim land. Sooners were those that put their necks on the line and claimed land prior to the signal to go. The rest of the settlers that left at the signal (Boom of a cannon IIRC) were known as Boomers.

Actually, the "Boomer" name is commonly misrepresented, even by Oklahomans. The true origin of the term is the legislators and activists promoting the opening of the Unassigned Lands (Indian Territory) for settlement.

Thanks for the link, but all I get out of this is you're a state based on Indian-hating cheaters! Of course, other threads have taught me that you're a bunch of kind, friendly, hospitable Indian-hating cheaters, so it works for me!

Some of us are even "indian hating" Indians. Oklahoma has a large Native American community.
