WTF, 3 lousy questions?!?

Nobody else covering the programs cares enough to ask anything!? Nothing about how you plan to examine budgets and make sure the resources we DO have are allocated correctly? Nothing about weighing the priorities of competing in revenue sports vs non-revenue sports. Nothing about POPCORN!?

On the flip side, AZ football is arguably the worst team in the Power 5. Not sure what he is going to do to support Loeffler or the program.
And then there is hockey. SMH...... Once again, the only program BGSU can legitimately say we COULD win a national championship...... the guy has no experience running that program that I see.
Fair criticism. I am guilty of forgetting about hockey a lot just because the sport doesn't interest me, but you are absolutely correct that BGSU should focus on hockey as much as any sport in the department. It is curious that he doesn't have experience there.

Although limiting yourself to people experienced managing Hockey/Football/Basketball may be limiting. The hope is whatever skills he gained working in Arizona would translate to hockey as well as elsewhere in the department.

Fingers crossed.
Quite frankly it's not as big of an issue for hockey as you think. There's an associate AD who helps to run the program and I'd argue that individual is more important than the main AD.
There is? I don't know of whom you speak... and would love to hear Ty's take on that comment.
Chet Hesson is listed on staff as the associate AD for hockey. I can't comment on how well he's involved with the program. Certainly if he's not then I hope Derek leans on the right people to help make sure the program stays viable.
I think you may misunderstand what role the Associate ADs play - at least currently. Chet is a really good guy but focused on academics for all student athletes. While he may have some relation to Hockey, it is strictly from a support perspective, not leadership.

Certainly clears up my misunderstanding, appreciate it.

Pretty basic press conference, surprised there weren't more questions asked publicly. Get the vibe this is definitely a hire meant to move the football program in a better direction, we'll see if it pays off. Derek has a monumental task ahead of him.

There are only about 60 hockey programs total, and only about a dozen or so play football in the fbs. Requiring prior experience in hockey would dramatically limit our candidate pool, especially if we also require experience in the fbs.

I don't think he needs to know a puck from duck to run a program that includes hockey. He's an administrator not a coach...the big question is, can he plug in the right people to run the program and can he correctly fit the program in to an operating hierarchy

I totally disagree with this. Either we are in on hockey or we are not. Clearly we are in on football with this hire which is fine with me. But BGSU is in a very unique position in that we have both football AND hockey at the DI level. We are consistently underfunded...even though some posters on this board seem to think a new AD is going to make it rain money all of a sudden.

We DO need experience at the AD level if we have a D1 hockey program. That's like saying you don't need any experience with basketball to be the AD at BGSU.

SMH again!!!!!

Also very disappointed with the questions. I assume several members of the media have one-on-ones scheduled and wanted to save their specific questions for that style interview instead.

Greg Christopher had experience with hockey and nearly cut the program.

Bob Moosbrugger had no experience with hockey and we made the NCAA tournament.

I don't think it's an end all, be all.

This is the key to being successful in a position like AD.

Press conferences are nothing like they used to be. With the shrinking of local media like newspapers, especially in smaller communities, the numbers are much smaller. And with so much of "media" revolving around the internet, most of these folks do their jobs very differently than when I pounded a keyboard. I would suspect there will be a few key interviews published but probably not much else.

Knowing Arizona State has hockey and they are Arizona's chief rival, I'd bet he has more familiarity with hockey than we think. At one time, the PAC 12 was considering a hockey league. I found an article on this from 3 years ago and it included this paragraph about Arizona:

"The Arizona Wildcats, like the Colorado Buffaloes, field an ACHA D-1 program in the WCHL. If the Wildcats were to make the jump to a potential PAC-12 Hockey Conference, they could continue playing where they do currently at the Tucson Convention Center (TCC). The TCC also hosts the AHL’s Tucson Roadrunners, an affiliate of the Arizona Coyotes of the National Hockey League (NHL)."

I would imagine Covid probably killed the impetus for this or at least delayed it quite a bit.

Moosbrugger will be judged more on the Eigner hire than the fact BG made the NCAA tournament under his tenure with a coach he inherited. So far the results have been less than stellar with Ty at the helm.
