WV Gameday!

Post by Globetrotter »

Alright.....Flipper had to remind me but we have a game today.

So.....if you watch it....I want to get your insight....who looked good. Who looked bad. How would you grade the newbies....who stood out etc....

For now....who do you think starts?

I got

1-Metheny (they are going to West Virginia he is starting)-Lightfoot
2-Mills (He started 22 games last year)
3-Curtis (24 starts and leading ppg returner)
4-Turner (Sr returner)
5-Agee (I think he's the most dynamic big we have)

Who I would start
1-Metheny (So 5-11)-Lightfoot (Fr 6-0)
2-Curtis (Sr 6-4)-Mills (Sr 6-3) McComb (Fr 6-3)
3-Ayers (Sr 6-5)
4-Turmer (Sr 6-7)-Felt (Fr 6-9)-Towns (Jr 6-9)
5-Agee (Jr 6-8)-O'Neal ( Sr 6-7)-Diarra (Sr 6-11)-Etim (Fr 6-9)

Interesting that the roster as Mills listed as a Sr and Metheny as a So.

I'm sure Metheny got redshirted last year since the rules have changed wrt games played now or they are already counting his Covid year? But it has to be a medical redshirt right?

Could be COVID. Could be medical. I don't know what the new rules are for that. He only played in 10 games, sat out the final 17.

Looks like it. But I had assumed Mills would be a Jr.

I had it like this

1 Metheny 5-11 Jr/So 6.2p 2.8a 21.6(3%) 24.7m Lightfoot 6-0 R
2 Curtis 6-4 SR 9.5p 3r 3.1a 33(3%) 22.5m Mills 6-3 Jr 4.4p 21.9(3%) 20.9m
3 Ayers 6-5 Sr 10p 26.5(3%) 26.1m McComb 6-3 R
4 Turner 6-7 Sr/Jr 6.6p 3.6r 37.5(3%) 17.8m Felt 6-9 R Towns 6-9 Jr Xfer
5 Agee 6-8 Jr/So 20.1pg 11.5rpg 35(3%) O'Neal 6-7 SR 3.5p 9.5m Etim 6-8 Fr Diarra 6-10 Jr Xfer

They list Turner as a Sr, Mills as a Sr, Agee as a Jr and Metheny as a So.

regardless.....

I am most excited to see what Agee and Felt bring. This group has me excited about Lightfoot too. I assume that McComb is a redshirt.

I'd bet this is the rotation

1 Metheny 5-11 So 6.2p 2.8a 21.6(3%) 24.7m Lightfoot 6-0 Fr
2 Curtis 6-4 SR 9.5p 3r 3.1a 33(3%) 22.5m Mills 6-3 Sr 4.4p 21.9(3%) 20.9m
3 Ayers 6-5 Sr 10p 26.5(3%) 26.1m
4 Turner 6-7 Sr 6.6p 3.6r 37.5(3%) 17.8m Felt 6-9 Fr Towns 6-9 Jr Xfer
5 Agee 6-8 Jr 20.1pg 11.5rpg 35(3%) O'Neal 6-7 SR 3.5p 9.5m

I am most curious how those big man minutes roll out.

Interesting this is the roster for 2023-2024...if that is right. 6 scholarships....maybe 2 nice freshman to build off of. Could be a quick rebound for the new coach. (Lets go Scott Loefler!)

1 Lightfoot 6-0 Fr
2 Metheny 5-11 So 6.2p 2.8a 21.6(3%) 24.7m McComb 6-3 Fr
3
4 Felt 6-9 Fr Towns 6-9 Jr Xfer
5 Agee 6-8 Jr 20.1pg 11.5rpg 35(3%) Etim 6-8 Fr

Anyone excited about any returning players?

I'd pick Curtis from that group because he showed an ability to score and distribute last year especially in the Mac. Was disappointed in Metheny and Turner's growth last year. Mills can't shoot any worse this season but his role should stay the same

Plenty of excitement for the newcomers but we will need some guys that have been in the system to step up if we're going to finish in the top 8 this year

Might watch some of the game tonight but will be there for sure on Tuesday

I think if you are going to build a team to do anything you build with rocks. For me that is probably Curtis-Ayers-Turner.....Curtis can lead the team and be a star I think. If someone was going to get All MAC honors I think its him. Ayers it s rock. He has 2 straight years of avg over 10 pts a game. He rebounds at an OK clip for a small forward too. Turner has a nice motor and will bang and clean things up.

First impression watching warmups - Metheny’s shot looks quicker and a couple of our bigs can JUMP. Couldn’t tell exactly who because warmups were on.

Gabe O’Neal starting. He was not one of the athletic bigs I mentioned.

Can’t imagine Metheny is the starter this season. He looks pretty overmatched as a ball handler. Could really only see him as a sharp shooter type.

Can confirm Diarra was the other big I saw who has hops. Just came in and made a really nice defensive play and was really quick down the court. He has a high floor for a MAC big.

Surprised Diarra got in so quick and seems to be pretty good.

These were his juco stats
Played 16 games last season for Indian Hills, starting seven while averaging 2.4 points and 2.6 rebounds per game.
Played 20 games with three starts with Eastern Illinois averaging 3.1 points and 3.5 rebounds per game

It’s been brief times on the floor, but Diarra and Lightfoot should both be starters. Also, the hometown crowd is in Metheny’s head. He’s been pulled aside by coaches twice.
