Re: vs. Western Michigan (11/2)
I actually watched probably my first game of the year last night. Some thoughts
1-We have loads of offensive talent
2-The line seems to be ok
3-The QB is ok but not great----I am very curious who takes over next year? Does Orth get a year?
4-We have loads of Defensive talent
5-We should be better, we should be more dynamic. I don't mind trying to get to average before you start to do more dynamic things, but this offense needs an infusion of some spicy playcalling that puts people on edge.
6-The football team being 500 at season ends likely means no change.....which means we get a new Basketball coach sooner.....I hope
7-I had given up on ever watching falcon football again. I assumed It wouldn't be fun knowing they don't compete on a high level. Like watching the Columbus Clippers. I am starting to understand that its just a different feel. You can root for the team and hope they win the MAC and understand you are a second class citizen and always will be and be ok with that.
8-On a national scale college football is broken and the rich are strangling every little bit of life out of it without a thought to what could be created if they didn't. They have an example of the NFL....a rising tide could lift all boats.....they don't care.
9-There are easy fixes that no one will do
1-16 team tournament with every conference connected
2-Reorganize the conferences just for football based on proximity. Make this large teams play at small stadiums boosting fan bases country wide. For instance. Put all of the Michigan-Ohio and WV/Western PA schools in a conference. Travel is easier. Rivalries are better. Michigan has to go to BG and Toledo some times. Those fan bases grow but will never be Michigan but you tap into entire populations of fans that are now dormant. The top end of that conference is still about the same....OSU-Michigan-Cincy-Michigan St-Pitt. The fact that OSU and Cincy don't play is stupid
3-If thats too drastic just take control of 2 OOC games. Make teams pick out of a hat and travel to a team that is smaller. I know that you are killing pay days there but in the long run it would be far better for programs.
4-A system of relegation would make college football cool again. Stop pretending the Group of 5 is at the same level as the Power 5. Separate them. Have 4 conferences. The worst team in the conference drops down the champ of the lower conference rises up.
Make college football fun again.

What was the deal with Ta’Ron Keith, by the way? After the game, Loeffler heaped praise on him for playing, saying he probably wouldn't have in his situation. Had he been sick?

We have a lot of good players...we are not a good football team. Fortunately...the MAC is not a good football conference, so we have a shot.

Re: vs. Western Michigan (11/2)
Official attendance was 7,584. Ohio got over 16,000 Tuesday night for Buffalo, Peden looked pretty full on TV.

Re: vs. Western Michigan (11/2)
The team will lose out. Things have fallen BG’s way for the entire MAC schedule. The only way the offense scores is if the defense gets 3 or more turnovers in a game and the defense looks great against teams that can’t throw the ball.
Those last 3 teams will be able to move the ball and score points against the defense. Offensively BG won’t be able to keep up. They’ve been unbelievably lucky thus far…they aren’t good. Just playing s**t opponents.
Re: vs. Western Michigan (11/2)
Looked about that size, but sounded pretty good on TV. I thought it actually sounded louder than Peden did, which is probably more related to how everything was mic'd up. Was hoping for about 10,000 considering the weather was so perfect.jpfalcon09 wrote: ↑Thu Nov 03, 2022 12:25 pmOfficial attendance was 7,584. I actually think a lot will rely on if Osborne comes back for the last few games. Osborne/Hilaire/Broden would be in the mix for the best WR trio in the MAC (imagine if we had a Matt Johnson to throw to them). I'm guessing that we go 1-2 in the final three games. Kent State's offense has been extremely Jekyll/Hyde and their defense has been pretty bad in MAC play. Toledo may not have Finn back, and their backup QB is not mobile. Ohio is probably a loss. Rourke is the real deal down there.

You seem so certain.
I'm not. Hard and fast predictions don't always pan out. I mean...
I don't know if Bowling Green will win next week, but I think we have a shot. This team has gotten better over the course of the season and I think that's in part due to the coaching. The staff has gotten the team to make adjustments to different opponents as they've come along.
I look forward to seeing what others have to say about how we match up against Kent State. We weren't that far away from beating them last season and they seemed underwhelming against Miami and Ball State.

Yup… I also said things would have to really break the team’s way to win 5 games and they have. I definitely think the team is more talented, I think the wins are heavily beneficial on the defense having no threat of getting beat in the air. The last 2 years anytime a QB is even borderline competent the team gets beat and usually gets blown out. Team hasn’t faced even below avg QB play in the MAC wins. It’s been “this QB can’t throw the ball in the air 15 yds and have it in the vicinity of the receiver.”
Marshall and Central are the only games that surprised me we won, but they really couldn’t have played any worse with turnovers. Some of that may be coaching, but some of that is luck too.

He had a personal family sudden issue that a lot of people would have sat out for. Kudos to him for soldiering thru and playing tough. I have felt all along he is our best back, even over Stewart.Schadenfreude wrote: ↑Thu Nov 03, 2022 11:00 am What was the deal with Ta’Ron Keith, by the way? LOL. Exactly
It felt a little bit like it was a group of guys who showed up to a football camp and were grouped together. Everyone is talented but not used to playing together. Yet they have played together....

Throw Lewis in there and then Sims and Fannin and I'm not sure there's a better receiving corps in the league. Think of Matt Johnson throwing to them AND a line that can give him time. Although the protection has been better than last year, McDonald still spends a significant amount of time running for his life. All but a just a few of his passes last night were to within 10 yards of of the line of scrimmage because there wasn't time for longer routes.

Western Michigan made it tough for McDonald last night, no doubt. I wonder if Kent State can bring that kind of pressure. If our line holds up better, that could be a big deal for us.Beaker wrote: ↑Thu Nov 03, 2022 2:31 pm Although the protection has been better than last year, McDonald still spends a significant amount of time running for his life. Lots of disguised blitz packages last night by the Broncos. WMU had a few instances where guys came in unblocked. Game plan seemed to be a lot of 1-2 step drops and screens hoping to take advantage but nothing ever really materialized in the big play department.Schadenfreude wrote: ↑Thu Nov 03, 2022 2:39 pmWestern Michigan made it tough for McDonald last night, no doubt. For reference, Kent's pass defense is 125th in my metrics (bad), 44th vs. the rush (slightly better than average). 130th in overall play efficiency, 107th in negative play generation (very poor). They did play a tough non-conference schedule but only the rush numbers have improved since the start of MAC play. My guess is BG gets aggressive in the pass game next week.
