I think Holland is my favorite of the new recruiting group. Probably because I know the most about him...but he just seems like an athletic big man that we can use. Speaking of things we can use. Hey students...look around campus. Any 6-8 250 pound guys walking around looking to expand there extracurricular activity list? Tell them to walk on.
Speaking of 6-8 250 guys. any chance we could get a football player for a year?.....Some names just looking at the roster
Julian Shibley 6-7 260
Kevin Mahoney 6-6 295 lettered in basketball
Jarrett Buckosh 6-7 254 3 letters in basketball-seems like the most likely choice.
A post a few weeks back...."One of our o-line recruits, Jarrett Buckosh, had an outstanding game last night with 22 points and 11 boards in Lorain Clearview's loss to undefeated Rocky River Lutheran West. Buckosh went head-to-head and outplayed LW's 6'10" Richard Semrau. Semrau is one of the top juniors in Ohio and is being actively recruited by North Carolina, Kentucky, Wake, and Louisville"
To me it would make sense if he played basketball in what would likely be a redshirt year of football for him. at 6-7 254 he might be a perfect fit next to Vandermeer. And the basketball team does not have to waste a scholarship. I had heard murmurs on this board about issues between the football and basketball team over Newsome and Magner not playing......But if he was almost assured of playing would there be a problem?
This makes a ton of sense to me. But I dont know the nuances or politics of it.
The team with Buckosh....(Keep in mind he will add a good 15 pounds by then...Also If I were a football coach I would be mindful of a potential injury but also have the realization that a season of basketball would keep him fit. There may also be an issue with him not being able to properly bulk up by playing a season of basketball is redshirt year. )
1 Floyd 6-2 185 JR--Robinson 5-9 170 SO--Phillips 6-3 200 JR
2 Wright 6-3 170 SR(Jr?)--Wilson 6-5 FR--Montgomery 6-4 175 JR
3 Soler 6-5 215 SR--Sullivan 6-6 FR--Freeman 6-6 SO.--(Fitch 6-4 SR)
4 Buckosh 6-7 254+ FR--Holland 6-8 FR--Marshall 6-7 FR
5 Vandermeer 6-11 245 So.--Lefeld 6-11 240 JR
The obvious question should be what makes you think that he would start over guys who were recruited to play basketball. The answer is nothing on the ability side...I was just doing this outlook based off teh need for a physically imposing PF next to Vandermeer. I would expect him not to play much more than 20 mins a game at most.
The likelihood of this happening is slim but how the PF position shakes out will be great to watch. I would love to be a fly on the wall for the practice on practice battle between Sullivan, Holland,Marshall and Lefeld to see who sees the most PT next year.
Can we pluck a football player for some time?
