I would add that, in his press avail yesterday, Loeffler said he felt the portal was hurting opportunities for high school kids. I've never fully followed the logic of that (if Bowling Green grabs someone from Alabama A&M, doesn't that create an opportunity for a high schooler at Alabama A&M?) but if Loeffler believes it is so, that adds some credibility to that idea.

That's true unless Alabama A&M fills that open position with someone from the transfer portal. I'm just throwing this out there but they could be thinking 'why develop a high school player when we can go to the portal and add someone that already has college football experience?' Coaches in theory wouldn't be starting from the ground floor in the development process. They have someone ready to play day one. Since the "student-athlete" hit the portal once, they are probably less likely to leave the program because they would have to sit out a year. Whereas as a high school kid would be developed for a year or so, have a good year, enter the portal and have the ability to leave without sitting out.

I suppose this could trickle down so that there are less D1 FBS opportunities for HS kids if FCS kids are transferring up, but the logic still never makes sense to me.

At the end of the year every school has the same number of scholarships they've always had. Unless the schools are somehow being incentivized to NOT use them all the total # of kids playing college football stays the same. The only way there are less opportunities for HS kids is if there are less kids leaving college football (through graduation/leave early/etc).

So is the logic that in prior rules kids would just wash out of whatever U and thus free up a scholarship, but now that they can transfer and play elsewhere there are less opportunities? Maybe, that makes sense. But is that BAD?

To me the loosening transfer rules have coincided with COVID weirdness granting extra eligibility. Once all the kids with extra years move on it'll be right back where it always was. X kids graduate, Y kids leave early for NFL or whatever, Z kids wash out of college football completely. New HS scholarships opened up = X+Y+Z. The fact that V kids moved from one program to another may change the landscape of WHERE Those HS kids can get scholarships, but the total spots will remain the same.

J.T. Daniels in the portal for the hundredth time after losing his job at WVU. He has one more year left. Would like to see us go after him. His problems have been injury related but he has a great arm and quick release. Would be a good fit in Loeffler's offense.

At Kent State, WR Dante Cephas, 1st Team All-MAC KSU RB Marquez Cooper, and 3rd team All-MAC QB Collin Schlee are all in the portal. Losing a head coach hurts.

Add two of their starting OLs. Might be a rough year in Kent next season.

Per espn “ Daniels, 22, will have at least one year of eligibility remaining. That could end up being two years depending on whether he gets a medical redshirt for 2019, per a source. He's seeking a location, regardless of level, that could help him develop and fulfill his ambitions to reach the NFL.”

I would say don’t consider BG if you’re looking to develop at that position.

Mack Brown foreshadowed this a few weeks ago. Teams that undergo coaching changes are going to see a mass exodus. That's nearly every impact player Kent had this season on their way out.

For as much as we bemoan Loeffler, it would be no different here at BG if he was fired or went elsewhere. It would have a discernible negative impact on the program regardless of what you think about Scot.

How many players on the BGSU roster would get an offer from Notre Dame? This Kent situation is much different than Bowling Green. Kent has more talent than BG, especially with eligibility left. I bet it won’t take Kent St 5 years to be competitive again.

Let’s not make more excuses to keep mediocre coaches.

It does go both ways though. If you hire the right coach he can bring kids with him to help replace what leaves.

This could be yet another area where looking to the FCS ranks for coaches makes sense. The best FCS teams are not much different than the MAC in terms of talent level these days. Steal away a top FCS coach and I wouldn't be surprised at all if he brings some kids with him. They'd be transferring "up" to stick with the coach/system they already know.

We have a number of players with eligibility left who could play P5 football. Hillaire, Fannin, Broden, Keith, Anders, ...that's just off the top of my head. We have guys that can play...they're hamstrung by our horse and buggy offense and a coach who can't build an OL

The key to retain players after a coaching change is to be fast with your new hire. Kent is a little different situation. They rightly value having a strong athletic department across the board and not just dump money into football. Rumor is Lewis tried to leverage the Colorado offer into a raise and more resources and Kent said best of luck.

Side note…
I can’t believe we have to watch another season of this coach. I guess at least the QB will be different but getting to 6 wins just delays the inevitable.

Loeffler has said McDonald could get another year...in my mind, that makes us Gilligan's Island...
