This. I'm simply baffled that we continue to try and run this offense. It's horrible, and we do nothing well with it. We don't consistently move the ball with it and we struggle to score with it, run with it and pass with it. The only thing we seem to do is get off the field fast with it (which is obviously, not good at all). It's such a struggle for us to move the chains, and when we have the ball, it feels like we're either playing uphill, or against 12-13 guys on defense. And you hit the nail right on the head about the OL, we simply can't build one and that's a big part of all the above. We recruit and we added transfers and we're still faced with a big problem. Robinson was the only exception as he can clearly play and is without a doubt our best OL. Unfortunately, we only have him for 1 more game and he's gone.

Heard from a reliable source that McDonald is not planning to return.

McDonald himself posted on Senior Day "This is my last senior day, I promise." Obviously things could have changed, but he seemed content to make this his final ride here.

With the caveat "be careful what you wish for". I'm glad to hear McDonald is moving on. He did some things really well...some things not so well...but he soldiered on. I actually think the scheme may be the bigger issue than him...we'll know more about that next year assuming SL returns

Loeffler said this week he's looking in the portal at quarterbacks, offensive linemen, and maybe one other position (perhaps a defensive backfield position, but I might have that wrong). Other than that, the plan for now is to focus on high school talent.

QB and OL are for sure two areas we need...no, make that MUST...hit the portal again. And we need a QB who can also run. I'm not saying the QB needs to be a run-first QB, but they need a dual-threat kind of a guy to be able to keep the plays alive with their feet. When our plays on offense break down - and they do often - we are usually toast. Look at what some of our peers in the MAC have and what they can do with the ability of a QB who can move. Toledo, Ohio, Kent State, etc. Look at the problems those type of teams give opponents. Josh Harris (a true dual-threat) was a MASSIVE threat for us. Look at what Matt Johnson was able to do. He wasn't a great runner, but he could run and extended plays when needed and kept teams honest. We're a sitting duck at QB if we can't find an open passing lane and have been for a few years now.

Agreed. I think most of us can agree that we never saw what SL sees in him. And honestly, we've all seen enough game proof to make the declaration that we're probably right. No matter what SL saw in him at BC or sees in him in practice, it hasn't translated to the field in most cases. That said, McDonald has proven to be one tough son of a gun. He's taken a pounding and has gutted out some wins for us. I'll always give him credit for that. I hope he can close out his career with a bowl win. He surely deserves it after all he's been though.

Coaches said they were taking at least 2 portal QBs.

Sounds good to me. Any hope of winning a MAC Championship the next two years means you're going to have to beat guys like Kurtis Rourke and Dequan Finn. That's a very tough task for the rest of the MAC including BG. We're nowhere near that caliber of talent at QB - and it's going to take something like it to compete with that kind of firepower.

Orth and Gunther aren't good enough so makes sense. Wonder if either of those guys head out themselves. I think Bainbridge has potential but he's still pretty raw.

I wonder if when things are a bit more figured out, if the transfer portal doesn't end up a great thing. Why go to a D1 school if you won't start as a QB right away when you can go D2 start and play two years and everyone is so used to this process now that you get plucked in to start somewhere if you are good enough.

Bringing in two QB's in the same year seems like a good way to have a QB transfer out in a year...unless one is guy with 1 year left and the other one is younger

Not at all shocked to hear that...and I'm not assuming it's an issue with the coaches OR the players...it's just the way of the world now

College football is going in a really bad direction…I heard a radio show half joking about being able to trade for players mid season pretty soon.
The MAC really needs to look at the product they put on the field this year. It was mostly just bad football. If that is the best the league can put out there, they should look at their options. If the MAC is going to be a JUCO league for bigger schools to grab the better players after a year or two, then I think you’re eventually going to see schools look to get out.
