College football is going in a really bad direction…I heard a radio show half joking about being able to trade for players mid season pretty soon.
The MAC really needs to look at the product they put on the field this year. It was mostly just bad football. If that is the best the league can put out there, they should look at their options. If the MAC is going to be a JUCO league for bigger schools to grab the better players after a year or two, then I think you’re eventually going to see schools look to get out.
This coming from someone that’s main focus in sports is around BG football since the late 90s. I think the MAC/BGSU need to take a long look at possibly reinventing themselves. I mean a good season for us is to go 10-4 and get blown out in a bowl game because the coach is already moved up the ladder. Yeah they are expanding the playoff but when was the last time BG went 11-0, 12-0 or 13-0? I bet our last win streak to even come close to that was 2002 when we started 8-0.

Focus on hockey and basketball and make them powers. Add sports like women’s hockey (which just makes sense)and Lacrosse. Elevate the soccer programs etc. Dont have a men’s XC team if you don’t have men’s track, that makes no sense.

Do it before the market makes you do it. Just my opinion though I got this idea from another Bg alum.

Been saying the MAC needs to figure out football on a different scale for some time now. I just don't see how we can continue on the path we're on now

Bowling Green's men's basketball is atrocious. This would be a terrible investment, especially if it came at the expense of a more successful program like football.

And football has been worse than it it the last 7 years. I get it. We all know your stance and think we are the same as the schools with budgets that dwarf us just because we’re in the same division.

You've obviously missed the point of the discussion with a comment like that.

In the MAC standings? Perhaps. But the very worst MAC football team is still de jure in the upper half of Division I. Bowling Green men's basketball is like 289th right now in the latest RPIs.

BGSU also gets more positive exposure for the university playing FBS football than it does in men's basketball. ESPN isn't paying the MAC for basketball content.

I don't see much of a point there worth considering.

It gets old having existential arguments about Bowling Green football program in a forum devoted to Bowling Green football. Nearly every thread eventually devolves into it. It's frustrating. Why in the world would we want Bowling Green to emulate Wright State or Cleveland State or Ferris State?

Perhaps it is time to start some discussions in the basketball forum about whether it is time to defund men's basketball. Why are we sinking money into a dumpster fire that can't even beat Queens or Southern Indiana and almost never gets on TV? Sure, the NCAA requires us to have a men's basketball team, but does it have to be so expensive?

I realize a discussion like that might be unfair to the players and coaches who are busting their butts trying to win basketball games. But fairness on this board only seems to run in one direction.

The funny part is we already invest enough $$ in basketball (Thank you Mr. Frack) to be a top tier MAC program. Unfortunately the people in charge of spending that money have just wasted it.

If we want to keep spending millions a year on football, I guess that's fine, we just have to realize that we success in that sport now means competing for MAC titles while still being largely irrelevant in the landscape of college football.

Those discussions cannot happen until Isaac Elsasser is out of eligibility. Bowling Green Basketball might be 289th in RPI, but have you seen the coaches shoes?

“BGSU also gets more positive exposure for the university playing FBS football”

And what exactly are we getting from this exposure. The product is so bad they make jokes about it and call it maction.

I'm all for more money being diverted to the hockey program. Where you know we can actually compete with B1G schools.

1,331 players are in the portal, 858 from FBS schools.

This turnover is simply insane.

And this is exactly why I care less and less about college football - and college sports in general - each passing year nowadays, and also why we'll continue to spin our wheels trying to get back to the MACC. We can't rebuild or reloaded to try and pass the few teams in this league that retain their players when we have key ones ready to walk out the door here. These are the guys we're supposed to be building around. We're as close as we've been in 7 years, but it won't matter when core guys we're trying to build around leave. It's also why I recently stopped investing in some of our programs. Why should I give good, hard earned money to support these guys, only to see so many of them turn right around and walk away? Yeah, I know, they're "doing what's best for them," right? I get it. But then so I am by not financially supporting the deterioration of a game and sport I used to love.
