2019 - 84 penalties
2021 - 96 penalties
2022 - 101 penalties.
That isn't going in the right direction. We have to be one of the most penalized teams in the nation.

That trend was supposed to have gone the other direction with us becoming a more "mature" team during that span.

To be fair, we did play an extra game this season.Falconfreak90 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 27, 2022 3:17 pm 2019 - 84 penalties

But you’re absolutely right, this isn’t near good enough, and it’s a significant factor in why we don’t win more games. We kill our own drives and extend our opponents’. That destroys a team’s chances.

BG is currently tied for third to last in all FBS. Ironically, Syracuse is currently in the lead to win the turd in punchbowl for this stat with 3 more penalties (105) than BG.
BG is currently 4th from the bottom in total yards penalized at 916. Eastern leads with 955. Nearly 10 football fields of penalties - good lord!
No discipline = bad coaching.

Like bad goals in hockey, penalties at inopportune times in football can cost you a game. Happened in the bowl game alone on the 4th down and 1 with the false start. Convert there and get points, BG may have won.
It's a sign of bad coaching but also that we have a group of kids who can't keep their composure.

The longer the walk, the farther you crawl.
Re: Season Penalties...
To me penalty totals alone don't indicate bad coaching. Holds, Pass Interference, type penalties often times simply result from being outmatched. Get beaten in your one on one matchup and frequently you're scrambling and commit a penalty.
That said personal fouls (especially after the whistle) and procedural penalties are definitely coaching issues. Be it composure/discipline related or simply not being prepared/focused enough to prevent those penalties.
I don't know if there is a breakdown on the types of penalties, but in my viewing BG seemed to rack up a lot of the types of penalties I would put on coaching, but when you're one of the most penalized teams in FBS you're probably racking up all types.
