vs OU
Can’t watch it, so listening and following live stats.
OU is hounding Ayer’s. SO, instead of forcing it, he’s set up his teammates. Had 3 early assists to set the tone. Mills has hit shots. Math envy is hitting shots. Agee has been absurd (10 pts, 5 boards and 3 blocks in 10 minutes. The entire rest of the team has 4 boards).
Is it possible we have FINALLY figured something out? Curtis and Agee off the bench is working. And they deserve respect for setting aside their egos and making it work. Apparently we are actually getting the kinds of shots for MIlls and Matheny that they can hit.
I’m feeling hope. I feel like a fool for it, but I am in fact feeling hope.

Re: vs OU
OU came back from 13 down and now Ayer’s is pressing. Making some, but trying to do all the stuff he was avoiding in the 1st half when things went well.
Re: vs OU
Wasn't just him. He, Curtis, and Matheny all reverted back to too much chuck and pray type stuff. Let OU back in it after we went up big.Diemilkweed wrote: ↑Sat Jan 07, 2023 6:29 pm OU came back from 13 down and now Ayer’s is pressing. Settled into a good game but a real stinker of 4-5:00 there when we should have had it in control.

Re: vs OU
OU stayed in that 3-2 zone that gave us fits. But we must have figured something out because after going down 72-68, we outscored them 7 - 20 the rest of the way to win 79-88.
We responded to a big tactical change and a poor run and fought it out.
Dang it, I am having yet more hope.

Re: vs OU
Seriously. Responding to adversity is not something I was expecting to see.
Ayer’s pressed. But he also did some scoring when nobody else was. And was great at the line late in the game.
This is the kind of platter I thought / hoped Matheney would be half way through his freshmen year. It’s so good to see him actually having success.
What did we change???

Re: vs OU
Interesting twist. Coach let Towns foul; out. Towns was doing well. Getting enough points and boards to keep Wilson’s insane night from completely destroying is. Towns got his 4th with just over 2 minutes left. I actually said out loud
“Meh. THere’s only 2 minutes left and Agee only has 2 fouls, we’re fine”.
And coach left him in. HE made a couple more plays before fouling out.
Coach LEFT IN THE HOT PLAYER AND LET HIM FOUL OUT, thereby maximizing how much time and productivity we got out of him.
Wow.

I’d expect those guys to be getting the shots against a zone though. It just needs to be in rhythm 3’s after distorting the defense. It seems like we got caught in “just shoot over it” or wildly plowing through it instead fo being surgical about it.hammb wrote: ↑Sat Jan 07, 2023 6:41 pmWasn't just him. Hard to tell over the radio, of course.
Re: vs OU
I tuned in catch the second half in complete dismay. I’m not sure what I just saw but it went against everything I have seen from this coach for quite some time. Is this the new norm? Did hell just freeze over? Are we about to be sucked back in just to watch another late season meltdown?
Not sure but I saw some hope.

No you're exactly right. Too many possessions in that stretch were just standing still and deciding to launch.Diemilkweed wrote: ↑Sat Jan 07, 2023 7:15 pmI’d expect those guys to be getting the shots against a zone though. Agee made a real nice skip pass to Ayers for One make that kinda started our ability to break it.
Re: vs OU
This was huge in the game yesterday and the answer was painfully obvious exactly what I (and others) have been harping on for years. Kaden Matheny can shoot (and maybe so can Mills), if you're not asking (or allowing) him to take crazy NBA range shots off his own dribble, or pulling up in transition from the logo. He did bring the ball up a lot yesterday, but most of his jumpers came off assists where he was catch 'n' shoot. The one late that put us in front by 4 was NBA range, but still a legit catch 'n' shoot look. Get him good looks in an actual offense and the kid can play. Now we all know he's streaky as hell, but when he's one he's great. He's over 41% on the season and 25 of 49 (51%) over our last 6. Yes, 2 of those were D2 games, but they were not outliers in this sample; whatever we're doing with him is working and it's a HUGE boost to this offense.Diemilkweed wrote: ↑Sat Jan 07, 2023 5:48 pm Apparently we are actually getting the kinds of shots for MIlls and Matheny that they can hit.
Matheny did make a layup yesterday, but also missed a open layup that came off some great give and go passing. But on the perimeter the dude can shoot when he's given good looks.
