Re: At Buffalo
Somebody made a great point on here about the lack of general social media support from the new AD. Seriously, nothing since 1/10/23 which I'm sure was somewhat obligatory to advertise for the legendary world renowned white out at the Stroh
This guy has to be paying attention. We can only hope, at least!
Being a fan of any team, to me, is all about hope. The thought of a promising season/post season push, imagining certain players taking that next step, hoping everything comes together for a memorable season. I choose to follow all my teams, BGSU programs specifically, with heavy optimism (I'm THAT guy in Pittsburgh that thinks the Pirates can compete for the division this year).
But the Bowling Green State University Men's basketball program is cooked with Huger at the helm. I'm sure I've defended him at some point on here, because I'm dumb, but the team is simply cooked. Doesn't matter how many players we had available last night. We all saw the effort, we all saw guys' standing around watching Agee fight for boards, we saw Chandler Turner think twice about passing to Curtis in real time (assuming he didn't want to see another 30 foot Curtis Brick). We saw Ayers with literal sadness in his eyes realizing the sort of situation he's gotten himself into. I'm still not convinced we don't see another Joe Curtis/Myron Gordon situation this year. Can't imagine there's a whole lot of happiness in that locker room.
Worst part is we're going to have 1 or 2 games, probably vs kent or toledo or ball state or some other late bloomer that we're not supposed to beat and play a perfect game / win easily because we have some dudes that can straight up play. I don't pretend to know more about hoops than Huger because I certainly don't. But this type of inconsistency on a game by game basis, especially from an effort stand point, is all coaching.

Re: At Buffalo
Given the limited success of the football season, wouldn't be surprised if the attention has turned to men's basketball as the program with the most immediate need of a fix, especially with it being the most resource friendly program at BGSU. It's in desperate need of a makeover. I'd imagine DVDM and Pres. Rogers are aligned on most of this.BPardonMyTake wrote: ↑Wed Jan 18, 2023 8:12 am Somebody made a great point on here about the lack of general social media support from the new AD. The longer the walk, the farther you crawl.

Everyday that Huger continues to coach BGSU basketball is a waste of time and resources. Moosbrugger is about off the books, let’s do Huger next.

I think they know they should fire him.
I am afraid they wont have the ability.
I kind of stopped paying attention....does he have 3 more years on his contract. So it would be a 2 year buyout?

Re: At Buffalo
He has 2 years left after this season. He was given the additional Covid year in November 2020 days after BGSU was picked to win the MAC, and with no fans in the stands.
Re: At Buffalo
With that extension, we don't know exactly the buyout terms, right? Is it full?

Attended more games than any responsible student should have.

Re: At Buffalo
No, I have not located the full contract posted on the web. Probably something that would need to be obtained through FOIA. Usually AD and Football contracts are readily available.

Re: At Buffalo
Pretty much every time I watch this team...I shake my head at Chandler Turner. The talent is there for him to be a really good MAC player...it just hasn't been developed. What a waste
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.
Re: At Buffalo
If they don't have the ability to fire him then I don't know what to say. I believe Guest is correct, it's 2 years after this one. This is his 8th season and (including this one) he's been exactly .500 or worse in 5 of them. The MAC record is well below .500. He's only had 20 wins twice (and with the OOC schedule he plays this should be the bare minimum). Even his couple of good seasons the team has limped into the MAC tourney typically playing worse as the years go on; the only saving grace on his entire resume here was that one run to the MAC finals. That singular feather in the cap was now 4 years ago, and that tourney run season was still another late collapse losing 4 of 5 before the tournament.Globetrotter wrote: ↑Wed Jan 18, 2023 8:41 am I think they know they should fire him.

The only reason I can see them NOT being able to fire him is how much less the Frack endowment pays this year. It may actually be $0. I'm not an expert on how endowments work, but the market has sucked so unless a lot of it is in cash interest bearing funds it's conceivable they don't get their usual return on it this year. THat would suck, but it's the nature of the beast.
Still, it has to happen. This guy can NOT coach. The fact he's gotten 2 extensions here is simply malpractice by an already fired incompetent AD. Van Der Merwe has his hands full trying to fix an overarching incompetent Athletic Department, but jettisoning this hoops coach is probably his most pressing on field (court) issue. Even if it means finding donors and begging for the cash to do so, it's insane we continue to let a new arena host 1000 or less people because the program is garbage.

And he invited Antonio to a hockey game, too. Glad he seems to be taking to that sport, as well. It’s clear how that sport sells the atmosphere and experience better than anything else on campus.pdt1081 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 18, 2023 10:21 am I'd say he's working on it.

Re: At Buffalo
Endowments will always pay out something, even during poor markets. It can vary, but there is usually a solid mix of high- and low-risk. It can vary, and the endowment itself can even shrink a bit (like Harvard's did last year), but there is always some kind of payout.hammb wrote: ↑Wed Jan 18, 2023 9:48 amThe only reason I can see them NOT being able to fire him is how much less the Frack endowment pays this year. That being said, we shouldn't be worried about the money not being there to buy out at least one coach this season, and that coach will be Huger. I don't have any doubt at this point.

Re: At Buffalo
Had an interesting convo with someone with ties to the department. They had some doubts whether the money was there to get rid of 2 years of Huger.
Re: At Buffalo
That is my one annoyance with the Stroh Center. When we played at Anderson basketball also sold that atmosphere and experience. At least it did until we re-hired Dakich then followed up with Orr. When BG first started talking about a new arena they were adamant that students would stay on the floor. I guess that's true with the seating behind the West basket, but that isn't the spirit I think any of us expected. Students at Anderson got to sit on the floor for the length of the floor, and it was amazing. They took away those seats from students, and to make matters worse, they didn't even sell them they gave them to the freaking media. There is zero reason to have media get the prime seats, they should be in the concourse.mbenecke wrote: ↑Wed Jan 18, 2023 10:29 amAnd he invited Antonio to a hockey game, too. We have had games (big ones against BUffalo & UT come to mind) where the atmosphere in there was pretty excellent, but it's never going to be the same as having students a foot away from opposing players trying to inbound the ball.
Also worth noting, and I LOVE Antonio Daniels, that he & Huger are boys. Huger hosted AD on his recruiting visit and they remain close. I'm sure Van Der Merwe is willing to pick his brain, but I find it tough to believe he's the one to put up some cash to fire his friend. Can he even look at the situation objectively enough to say he needs to be gone. Does he even keep his finger on the pulse of his alma mater?
Re: At Buffalo
You'd like to think an alum would be willing/able to see that it isn't working, that it's getting worse, and negotiate a lesser buyout to move on with his life and let BG move on from him.
Yes, it's asking a lot to willingly give up a $400k/yr gig, but damn man...you've made millions here and are taking us nowhere. Take the cash, and go find an assistant gig elsewhere.
