It’s just shorthand. Easier than typing his whole name out. Honestly, with a name like his, I don’t necessarily know where the last name actually begins to properly address him. And I feel like calling him Derek is just weird - it doesn’t roll off the tongue like Bob did. Lol

He needs a nickname ASAP.

Nugget from the presser: Derek van der Merwe says that he did not know Todd Simon until Southern Utah played Kansas this season. They had never met officially until this week.
