I agree, specifically with Agee, Felt and Lightfoot.Globetrotter wrote: ↑Thu Mar 16, 2023 12:43 amNah, Metheny-Agee-Towns-Felt-McCombs-Lightfoot would all be great to see under a new coach.Hammer wrote: ↑Wed Mar 15, 2023 10:23 pm There is nobody on this roster that is painful to see leave. Any decent coach should be able to replace them with better players immediately. Plowden was the last player we had that looked the part. We don’t have a single player that would start for teams like Toledo, Kent or Akron.

Re: 2023-2024 Roster tracking
It will be very ineresting to see how quickly Coach Simon puts together his staff and hits the recruiting trail, including the portal. The next few weeks are going to be almost as critical to future success as was the search for a new head coach.

I have a suspicion that this next season will not be pretty when looking at the W-L column because I'm guessing he's going to need to find at least 9 new players. The assessment will need to be more on style of play and competitiveness than end results. Could be wrong though! He might be a transfer portal wizard and put together a crazy roster right away like Buffalo has done a few times over the years.

Re: 2023-2024 Roster tracking
Shouldn’t be any worse. You’ve got a theoretically (also probably) better coach and you’re replacing what’s probably the least talented roster in recent history. A decent coach should be able to do better with a roster of jucos, transfers and bums than a bad coach.
Re: 2023-2024 Roster tracking
Our current roster is/was a mix of jucos/transfers/bums, so in theory you're right that a better coach should come right in and help out, but one reservation I have in saying that is the type of bums Huger liked to recruit. If coach Simon is trying to truly build a team culture and identity he may take slightly less talented players rather than letting the talented inmates run the asylum. We won a handful of games because Ayers & Curtis's selfish styles worked on a particular day their shots were falling. If coach Simon would rather sacrifice those handful of wins to ensure he's only letting "bought in" guys on the floor, then I can't argue with him, and it is conceivable we'd end up with less wins but a better coached team.JohnFloyd4Life wrote: ↑Thu Mar 16, 2023 11:56 am Shouldn’t be any worse. That's one of my frustrations coaching my son's basketball. Convincing the kids who think they're superstars that they're not playing right even if they did score a bunch of points. The game is unique in that regard.
I do hope that we're able to see some winning quicker than what he was able to do at Southern Utah though. I think the new transfer portal rules should work out in that regard, but we'll see.

Re: 2023-2024 Roster tracking
I did notice that his roster at Southern Utah was predominantly guys that had been there for a long time. Leading scorer is an Illinois transfer that had he’s had for 3 years and the next two were guys in their 5th year at SUU. Being able to keep and develop players in today’s transfer game is huge. Hopefully he can duplicate that here.

The longer the walk, the farther you crawl.
Re: 2023-2024 Roster tracking
Has been in the portal for 2 weeks.
Re: 2023-2024 Roster tracking
Good info there. Looks like Simon has at least left the door open for Metheny. Wonder if there are any who he has encouraged to move on. There are currently 600 players in the portal right now, so he won't have trouble filling out the roster. Just depends on how quickly he can make everyone gel.
