Looking ahead a bit, if we were to defeat Columbia tonight, I believe our hope for hosting the final would be Washington defeating Kansas. Kansas is hosting tonight and is expecting a pretty large crowd from what I hear. Washington's attendance has been middling when they've hosted, so if they win, I think BG would be the favorite to host.

In regards to Columbia, this team is really, really good and they are built similarly to ours. They don't have a ton of size but are really quick, shoot it well, and play aggressive defense for all four quarters. This will be the easily be the toughest matchup of the tournament for BG. They are another team that should have been in the NCAAs but were left out because of conference bias, even though they beat Memphis, Seton Hall & Miami on the road. I expect a physical game with a lot of fouls and a lot of turnovers.

The replay of the Columbia game vs. Harvard is available on ESPN3 if you have time to do some scouting. ;)

I watched parts of it last night...I didn't see Columbia as being physical at all. They're quick, but Harvard is nowhere near the level we are defensively. They don't have much of a post game which is usually what hurts BG the most...so we should match up well. They do have one guard, either Davis or Patrick, who is REALLY fast when driving to the bucket. If Brett can slow her down...which she probably can...we should do fine.

Robyn said in the blade article today that she hopes Hampton can play...that would certainly help our defense. It's sort of a catch 22 for us. Hampton's defense will limit them, but her lack of offense when compared to Velasco will hurt us.

Just hoping we have a good group of officials and that foul trouble doesn't impact the game. Two of the three refs we had for the Florida game did the Iowa-Colorado Sweet 16 NCAA Tournament game, so that's a quality crew.

Physical was probably the wrong word, especially when comparing to Florida and Memphis, but I think there will be a lot of contact on drives and shots because both teams go for the steal pretty aggressively.

I hope Hampton can play, but Velasco has definitely earned an increase in minutes. Also, great note about the refs. Had no idea we had such a good crew for that game, though I was impressed with how the game was called.

Coach nails the half-courter!

But of greater interest...you can see Hampton near the end on the baseline. Right ankle has a dark brace on it. She is walking, but does seem to have a noticeable limp though. Ideally she doesn't play again tonight and plays in the title game. ;)

Brutally slow start. Down 11-1 early.

BG was down 16 but closed the quarter on a 12-0 run and the Stroh is alive.

23-19 Columbia after the first.

Brett drills a 3 just before halftime to keep it close, but man… Columbia is making everything.

Lions lead 43-36 at the half. Gonna have to grind this one out.

Offense is driving a little bit too out of control, defense is giving up too many open looks, and we’re struggling to rebound at the moment.

Gotta reverse those trends if we hope to win.

Halfway through the 3rd, BG continues to trail by 8. Just cannot make open looks while giving up a bunch of second and third chance opportunities. We aren’t playing harder than them, and it’s showing.

Hsu is unbelievable, though. What a player.

They FINALLY called Davis for pushing off on Brett. Gotta be like the 4th time she sent BRett flying. And when Davis shoved Day down in the 1st quarter at te h5:07 mark with nobody else within 10 feet, they miraculously called somebody else for the foul instead of giving her her 2nd that she earned.
