The buyout is what matters here, the term and money really don't mean anything. Huger was canned with two years left on his deal so there is at least a little recent precedent that DVDM won't be scared to make a move if it's warranted.

From a high level view, this is an important time for BG athletics. WBB coach who is being sought after by a B1G school. Hockey coach who is entering the final year of a contract and has done very little to move the needle in that program. Obviously new MBB coach.

I see this as nothing more than a show me you can do it again this year contract. Token raise but nothing that screams you're doing nothing better than an average job.

Meh,

Went to a bowl game, signed a stud xfer QB. Got a stud RB back. Got his main LB back. Going to get a DL drafted

Extreme limitations when it comes to the OL and offensive creativity. OL coach gone. Not sure if we are doing anything around the creativity.

Broadly it would be really hard to replace all 4 coaches in the most revenue generating programs(I am not sure how to describe it but you know what I mean) within the same year.

I was happy he stayed because I think it meant Huger gone and that was more important.

I do think he could be the slow roll and eventually win here. I however think he needs to be open to redoing the offense for that. And I don't think he is.

I would temper our enthusiasm about our incoming QB...he was highly rated in HS and had a good season at Missouri his freshman year, but this is his third stop in as many years and each step has been down a rung. He started some at IU and struggled a bit before being benched ( to be fair IU football and the word "struggle" are almost synonymous) .

Like everything else...we'll see

Based on the contract information posted here, it seems clear to me that DVDM doesn’t see BGSU, or maybe most of the MAC for that matter, participating in the Bowl-Subdivision of college football in the long-term. I obviously don’t have any inside info, it just kind of seems like he may have looked at how much money would need to commit to draw a better coach right now and didn’t like what he saw.

How about if Loeffler can’t hold a spring game in 2024 then he automatically forfeits any buyout when he’s fired?

This is why BG sucks at Mens athletics…can’t wait to hear the excuses when the team struggles to win 4 games next year.

That's how I see it....it is a risky move. Some things have improved quite a bit, others have not. I mean the OL has been subpar for 3 years. Absolutely need to find 5 BiG studs and get a line again. We can't rush for 100 yards a game again this year...which is our average the last 2 years.

The MAC blowout losses are a WTF deal...how to you let those happen, 2 on your home turf??? Then the wins over Marshall and tsun...and Miami. that is still important to alumni. We did reach a bowl game which is a hell of a lot better than going 3-9. We had a chance to win the East but decided not to board the bus in BG going to Athens. HOW does that happen with the title on the line and OU with a back up QB??

1 year was probably not enough and 3 would be too many. How is the buyout structured? No question he must raise his game.

As a Falcon football fan since 1983 and '90 BG grad, I ALWAYS want to see BG kick ass, challenge for titles, and beat tsun and the one in Oxford. He is 2-2 against tsun and that's more wins against them than Clawson, Babers and Jinks combined. He gets that rivalry.

Jury is still out...for me, he isn't on the hot seat...yet. I called for him to get canned after the UB debacle cuz it was just soooooo bad. Overreacted on that. Get us to the MAC title game. PROVE to us you can get it done.

That is an interesting point...and very possible. We all know BG has the lowest budget in the MAC every year. But maybe w/ DVDM, we can get improvement in that area. We will never be a high roller but damn, we don't have to be the poor kid on the block all the time, either.

You wonder if the donor money that could funnel to contracts and buyouts, is now destined for players VIA NIL? Even harder now to get coach $$?

After a couple days to digest the news of the extension and trying take a non-biased view of the decision… I’ve settled down and come to the conclusion that…

it’s one of the dumbest contract extensions of all time.

There must be a gas leak in the AD’s office that makes it impossible to think clearly and not make dumb decisions.
Any good graces the AD got for making the change in basketball have been thrown out in my opinion.

Rouge - I was thinking along these lines as well. Again, with no inside information here, just speculation, DVDM enters his job as sees 3 of the 4 coaches in his revenue sports within a year or 2 of their contracts expiring. Within this, you have revenue and other resource issues within the department So you have to prioritize.

Now, FBS football is in a state of especially rapid change where $$ is flying around like crazy and the gap between haves and have nots is widening exponentially. Can you pay $800,000 to $1M for a coach at BG? Do you have NIL organized in a way that will attract someone worth that investment?

Im not saying DVDM didn’t want to make a change, he may just simply need more time to make the change he feels is necessary that creates the certainty he needs to know it can compete. Meanwhile, he has a coach that beat Toledo, he can kind of say is on a very, very small upward trajectory. Thus, do a minimal extension to buy time. If somehow Loeffler works, great! If not, he gets more time to get the $’s and infrastructure in place to hire the right person.

In addition, he buys more time to see how the MAC is fitting into all of this football realignment chaos.

I agree that there's a lot of factors that have to be considered over the next couple of years and that may make moving on from the current coach more difficult in the near term. My biggest worry is that the thing is going to completely fall apart next year...what happens then?
