Fralick to Michigan State

Post by BillyLP »

According to Briggs, Fralick has informed the team she is headed to MSU in a team meeting this afternoon.

Classy that she told them in person before the news broke. She deserves every good thing coming her way.

I really hope she brings Sparty down here for a game at the Stroh.

DVDM, time to find the coach that will take us to the next level.

My choices to replace her, in order:

1) Kim Cameron - Assoc. Head Coach, previously head coach at Michigan Tech for 8 seasons with 4 NCAA Tourney appearances. Would be the best choice to keep the roster intact and keep recruits who have signed (and we have a really, really talented class coming).
2) Kari Pickens - Head Coach at Ashland, where she replaced Fralick after serving as an assistant coach for several seasons. Has a ridiculous 139-15 record in four seasons and has her team in the National Championship game this Saturday.
3) Kate Achter - Very successful player here so she gets the tradition, has slowly gotten her programs better every season she has been head coach, but has never come into a situation where something was already headed in the right direction.

She's done an amazing job bringing the program back...wish her nothing but the best at MSU.

Ha, I thought about that, too, but she's a Columbia grad who is from and has only coached in the Northeast. She isn't coming here.

She can coach, that much is for certain.

I wouldn't want Kate Achter for the exact reason you stated. She's a proven builder of programs to dig them out of the basement, but has she taken a program to that top level? We are at the top of the conference right now. Until Kate proves she can get a team to that elite level, I wouldn't want to bring her here. She's an alumnus; our track record is to give alumni entirely too many chances because we don't want to cut them loose.

Cameron is my first choice. Program is in good shape so some continuity would be nice. As much as I adore Kate Achter (we went to high school together) I don't want any alums in coaching positions following the Huger debacle and Eigner steering the hockey program isn't oblivion.

Yeah, to be honest I really only want the top two considered.

Let Achter build Detroit and win something up there and maybe she can be the coach after Pickens or Cameron leave for a better gig. But I want to see it first. The program is in great shape, we can’t afford to miss on this hire.

When Falick hired Cameron I thought she was hiring her replacement...I think I even posted that here...so...unless she follows Fralick to MSU, I would think she's the front runner

I would be happy with any of the coaches mentioned, including Kate Achter. Loyola was 18-12 in her final year there, after she inherited an absolute dumpster fire. She got a raw deal at Loyola -- they had no reason to let her go other than their own delusions of grandeur. She inherited another dumpster fire at Detroit, & by the end of the year had them playing much better than anyone could have imagined in her first season.

That having been said, I'd still probably prefer Pickens or Cameron over Kate. I know I'll be checking in on Ashland's game tomorrow afternoon -- 3:30 p.m. on CBSSN.

If I was BG's AD or SWA, I would reach out to Karl Smesko at FGCU & see if he has any interest. I'm guessing he's never leaving Fort Myers unless it's for a Big Ten program, but the guy has had amazing success there, and he's an Ohio native -- from the Akron area, got his bachelor's degree at Kent State and his master's at Walsh. He coached one season at Walsh & won a national championship, and his record at FGCU is 582-105. Again, I doubt he would leave there for a MAC job, but why not reach out to him just in case?

Expected but still sucks. Best of luck to her at Michigan st and I'll bet they'll be relevant in a few years even in a tougher big 10

I'm no hiring expert but I would agree with the 3 listed in the listed order

I have no clue who might be the ideal replacement here, but this guy and Cameron would probably be my top two from the names mentioned here. Who knows, maybe Coach Smesko has family still in the Akron area and would like to be closer to home. In any event, this is hire no. 2 with our current AD. Let's hope he gets all of them very, very right.
