Best Players and Favorite Memories

Mawel Soler shattered a backboard in warmups and that might forever be the best memory in falcon hoops history.

McLeod had so many big moments, the buzzer beater against UM is probably the first one I think of.

Daniels and McLeod in their POY seasons were the best seasons I've ever seen.

I did not like Martin Samarcos game but I think he hit a crazy fallaway buzzer beating 3 once as well (maybe against CMU?)

There were a handful of times that Kevin Netter would look like a Gazelle running down the court for a dunk. Not nearly enough given his talent level but was awesome when it showed.

Plowden was a human highlight reel as a SO, was on SC Top10 seemingly every week.

My favorite players is a tough list, I've genuinely enjoyed so many of the guys I've watched come through here. My starting 5 favorites:

Pg - Antonio Daniels
SG - Keith McLeod
SF - Anthony Stacey
PF - Daequon Plowden
C - Richaun Holmes

Samarco's crazy shot was against Buffalo with the shot clock expiring but still extra time on the game clock. The late great Nate Miller then stole the inbound immediately afterward to seal the win. Amazing memory at Anderson.

I was a student between 05-09 so I don't have that many great memories on the men's basketball side of things, but that was certainly one of them

Joe Faine was probably my all-time favorite Falcon. Dude could shoot from deep. Sadly, he played before the 3-pointer. I'll never forget when he got severely hurt on a dunk leading the coach to ban the shot the rest of the season.

My second favorite was probably Marcus Newbern. Wasn't the tallest, but dude could nearly touch the top of the backboard...sadly like many others, he never reached his full potential due to injuries. David Jenkins was the same way. Best defender we ever had here before his knees failed him.

Also gotta love the story of Mike Midday getting bit by his pet piranha. Found out many years later that the actual story was that he cut his hand on a beer bottle. Props to whoever came up with that cover story!

But my all-time favorite memory was getting to spend time with the players through contacts with my late father (Hammb's grandfather). We got to become friends with Colin Irish's dad. Coolest thing ever for me as a kid though was one day after practice...or maybe a game...my father, me, Colin Irish, David Jenkins, and David Greer all piled into a Chevy Chevette and headed over to McDonald's on Wooster for some food. Probably was an NCAA violation of some sort at the time.

My dad, who opened Anderson Arena, used to go on and on and on about Howard Komives. I believe Komives might have been the best guard in the nation.

They really should play a game at Anderson Arena every once in awhile. Where throwback jerseys. I like the new Arena but Anderson was so great. Small, loud and right in the heart of campus.

Although that would be cool, I doubt the building would be in a condition to host a basketball game. The gymnastics program has bolted all of their stuff down, so I imagine the floor is not in a usable state.

Ohio University band was just plain obnoxious that day. That team was very balanced and played good basketball all year. Unfortunately they didn’t that day when it counted most.

I was a jr falcon that year. Had a broken arm so was in the stands the end of the season. Never saw anybody bring their band in before. We clearly had no idea it was going to happen because a hundred+ of our students suddenly got displaced. We set the MAC record for wins in a season that year - broken by Ron Harper's Miami squad the next year. John Devereaux and another giant big guy were just too much for us when our biggest rotation players were 6'8" or 6'7".

I'll go with favorite team while I was there, 1974-75. Roster included Cash, Montgomery, Howard, Cartwright and a few others. They came within 2 points of winning the MAC title that year -- lost by that in the home finale (CMU) breaking a 7-game winning streak to close the season. The game before, BG had blown out a pretty good Houston team 121-101.
