The scud board is reporting that MAC POTY Ray J. Dennis has entered the portal. That's unfortunate.

Saw that on Twitter today. Unfortunate for the MAC but I won't be sad about not playing him anymore.Redwingtom wrote: ↑Wed Apr 26, 2023 7:01 pm The scud board is reporting that MAC POTY Ray J. Dennis has entered the portal. That's unfortunate.

Just went and looked up Vanderbilt. 22-15 last year. He played 23 minutes a game for them, which looks promising. Then I looked at their stats. Thomas is a pure jump shooter who is not good at shooting. 63 of 201 overall and 50 of 166 from 3. 17 free throws on the season. And not a whole lot else.
Link to their stats page.

Odd stat lines for 3 years. 6-0 tall. Doesn't assist or rebound. Just shoots, and has been mediocre every year. He didn't shoot a ton of FT's last year, but he was above 94%, hitting 16 of 17. So clearly there are the makings of a good shot there somewhere I would imagine. He also hit almost 40% of his limited 3's as a Freshman.

I just hope that having a capable coach here means guys can come in with some raw talent/athleticism/traits and be developed. I’m excited to see what Simon can do.Redwingtom wrote: ↑Thu Apr 27, 2023 7:13 amHe didn't shoot a ton of FT's last year, but he was above 94%, hitting 16 of 17. I looked up his statline as soon as I saw his commitment, and he kinda seems like the Vandy version of Brenton Mills. Plays around 20 mpg but doesn't really do anything noteworthy. 3pt% went downhill over his time there, and those were basically the only shots he took.
Still, the MAC isn't the SEC, and here's hoping he can contribute something. Maybe he's a decent defender? Dunno. Simon wants to run, and he wants to jack up a LOT of 3s. Maybe he sees this kid as a fit for the volume/pace even if his previous stats weren't good.
At this point I'm keeping an open mind. I've seen way too many heralded kids come in and stink up the joint for me to assume somebody who struggled at a previous stop can't excel here.

If he can hit on 40% of his threes like he did as a freshman...welcome aboard

I thought the same thing. Mills was effective elsewhere and a non factor here. Maybe this guy can be the opposite.hammb wrote: ↑Thu Apr 27, 2023 8:14 am I looked up his statline as soon as I saw his commitment, and he kinda seems like the Vandy version of Brenton Mills. After watching some video I would say he’s Rod Caldwell. Hopefully more Ashland Caldwell than BG Caldwell.
