McDonald is not and was not the reason our offense rarely moved consistently, and put our defense on its heels most every game. You could have plugged him in Kent or OU’s offenses and he would have been fine. The best? No. NFL caliber? No. Good, smart, dedicated hard working kid. Beating a dead horse, this offensive scheme is laughable in this time….. a complicated albatross in this age of college football. SL is not a bad guy. Someone needs to punch him in the throat and convince him to give up on this scheme.

This is why he was available to be hired -- and why he got hired at BG. He's never going to be an innovator or anywhere close to running a cutting edge offense. He's solid in many areas, but not exceptional. And likely won't ever be exceptional. He's a nightmare hire for that reason; not bad enough that you get rid of him right away, but not good enough to win you anything, either.

And he'll never, ever give up on this scheme. It's comfortable for him and, like so many coaches out there, he's not the type of reconfigure how he runs an offense, even as he sees the world of college football passing him by.

Was at my buddy's draft party last night and somehow we got on the subject of Scott Loeffler.

It blows my mind that the man has continued to turn pure mediocrity into promotions.. I guess I should give him credit for frequently taking dumpster fire situations and turning them into stinky, not on fire, dumpsters, but that's about the best I can say for him. And he even did it here. Major props, took a 2 win team all the way up to 6 wins and only took him 4 years to do so. By this rate we should be winning 10 games by 2027!

I'm not shocked he's been able to consistently find work. Coaching is a fraternity, he's been around long enough to have deep connections and helped develop some high profile talent. His resume is impressive despite his perceived overall lack of success.

We clearly define "impressive" very differently. Yeah, coaching is good ol' boys frat party, so I get why he always finds work. I fail to see how he keeps getting work that is a promotion. Yes, his resume is impressive if you're looking at this progression of titles and jobs held (as you would somebody like, say, ME). But unlike me, we actually have public metrics and data on how he actually PERFORMED in all those job roles, and it was bad.

I see a guy who has not had actual success at any stop in the past 20 years. I don't see that as perception, I see it as reality. The best he can say anywhere is he took over bottom of the barrel and given enough years made them mediocre. Unless you're giving him credit for Tebow (which I absolutely don't) he's been QB coach and OC for a dozen different QBs, none of whom have been any better than what McDonald was last year.

That did happen, yes.

He’s a talented player that sometimes runs his mouth a little too much. Had some injury issues. If he’s healthy and can keep his trash talk under control, he can be an effective player in the MAC. Big if, though.
