2023-24 Schedule Question
One of my gripes about Coach Huger was his consistent scheduling to ensure a .500 win percentage for the entire season by scheduling 5 or 6 games against Our Sisters of the Poor Colleges every year.
Looking at Southern Utah’s schedule - should we expect the BG schedule to try and include more successful and ‘big’ programs moving forward?

Re: 2023-24 Schedule Question
I think Simon will shoot for a more balanced schedule that will give us good preparation for the MAC portion of the schedule. At least, that’s my hope.
Get teams like Dayton, Cleveland State, Valpo, Loyola Chicago, VCU, Oakland, Youngstown State, Detroit, Wright State, Northern Kentucky, Marshall, Western Kentucky, etc. on the schedule. We don’t have to travel far for like any of those games, and they should all be somewhat challenging. That’s a huge pool of opponents to pick from, and we could get almost all of them to come to the Stroh.
Beyond that, I would like to see us play a few bigger opponents like a Xavier, Butler, or Cincinnati each year. Ideally, we could get them to come here on rare occasions. Maybe do a 2 for 1 deal, where we get one of them in our building once in 3 years and visit the other 2, and then it rotates. Throw in some Big Ten schools like Michigan State or something every once in a while, even though it’s unlikely they would come here at this point. Lots of ways to get creative with that and challenge the team to get ready for the MAC season.

Re: 2023-24 Schedule Question
Hopefully the two guaranteed games against the Sun Belt conference for that new challenge series helps in preventing games against non-D1 schools. There are too many schools within a close distance for both home and homes and buy games that there shouldn't be non-D1 regular season games.
I'm honestly surprised the MAC and Horizon League have never done a challenge/scheduling agreement. Would help teams in both leagues with out of conference scheduling and all the schools are close proximity to one another within the same region of he country (with a few exceptions)

What did ESPN call that mid major thing they used to do that pitted us against schools like Youngstown State?
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.

Re: 2023-24 Schedule Question
The Bracket Buster series. They had most mid-majors be apart of it so they knew who the good ones were for the season when the matchups were decided in late January/early February. I believe the MAC/Sun Belt challenge will work similarly for its second game which will be during normal conference play.

BG reportedly draws a home game against Arkansas State for the MAC/Sun Belt challenge.

Western Kentucky should be an obvious fun relatively close rival. It just makes too much sense for them to rotate games every year and have some sort of fun game name attached to it.

Re: 2023-24 Schedule Question
Schedule is out, pretty meh. Only one non-D1 is better than some of our other conference foes. Hopefully Simon and van der Merwe can pull something better in 24-25 with series set by Huger and Moose out of the way. Apparently there is one more home game to be announced

Re: 2023-24 Schedule Question
This crappy schedule would’ve made Michael Huger proud. What a joke! I really thought Simon wouldn’t be as chicken sh*t in scheduling as the previous regimes. I hope they show us different and use the Frack money for a big game at home like we were promised.

Re: 2023-24 Schedule Question
Would any of these be contracted before Simon took over? We played Southern Indiana, Oakland and Hampton last year. UMKC previously in the Huger era. Air Force has us going to them on their schedule but we don't have them on ours.
If so after tournaments and challenges that would only leave 3 open games to schedule.

Re: 2023-24 Schedule Question
Almost definitely. Hard to judge until next year. Women’s scheduling is much different because the top teams are willing to play away games, unlike in men’s ball.Falcon Fryed wrote: ↑Wed Aug 23, 2023 2:37 pm Would any of these be contracted before Simon took over? Re: 2023-24 Schedule Question
As noted, most of this schedule was likely in place (with contracts) even before Simon was hired.ZuluWarrior wrote: ↑Wed Aug 23, 2023 2:23 pm This crappy schedule would’ve made Michael Huger proud.
