Yeah, Huger overstayed his welcome by about a year, but the man had some Grade A talent come through the program for a stretch, which was extremely welcome after the Louis Orr years.Bgsu2016 wrote: ↑Mon Aug 21, 2023 6:55 pmIt wasn’t all bad. I think his coaching acumen was always sub par, but his early recruiting classes bringing in guys like Frye, Wiggins, Turner, and Plowden were upper echelon MAC players that were good enough to overcome mediocre coaching for some decent seasons. Unfortunately their best year was against the best MAC team we've seen in a couple decades. Even though they returned, they never developed beyond what they were (again coaching...), but still the sheer talent was enough for them to play some good basketball.
I'd say he overstayed his welcome by at least 2-3 years, but either way it doesn't take away from the fact he did have SOME success here. I don't think he was ever going to win a MAC championship due to being such a mediocre coach, but the post COVID world really killed Huger. His recruiting went WAY downhill, and he didn't do a great job navigating the portal for year to year roster turnover.

People forget we were winning that MAC title game with just over 8 minutes left, then just picked the wrong time to go ice cold and only scored 8 points the rest of the way. Turner and Frye were a combined 7-33 in that game.hammb wrote: ↑Tue Aug 22, 2023 11:02 amFor sure.BillyLP wrote: ↑Tue Aug 22, 2023 10:37 amYeah, Huger overstayed his welcome by about a year, but the man had some Grade A talent come through the program for a stretch, which was extremely welcome after the Louis Orr years.Bgsu2016 wrote: ↑Mon Aug 21, 2023 6:55 pmIt wasn’t all bad. That combined with Buffalo's 5th starter Jeremy Harris turning into an NBA player those last 8 minutes was the only thing between Huger and a MAC title.
LONG LIVE THE MONGOOSE!!
