So far I am about half way through and I'd be legitimately excited about the top 7 and could get talked into about 5 more. How did we end up with Loeffler?

How did we end up with Loeffler? I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned it yet. Con Man Kit Hughes.

I'm sure Kit had a hand in it, but the overarching thinking at the time was that the reason Jinks was a failure was because he had so little D1/College experience and his entire staff was similarly lacking. The administration and many fans at the time wanted more experience.

So as often happens in coaching searches you go off the deep end in the opposite direction of your previous failure. Instead of a lack of experience we hired a guy with a wealth of experience despite an overwhelming failure of GOOD results within any of that experience. Loeffler is also the embodiement of my absolute least favorite thing in all of football: Nepotism hirings/good ol' boys club crap. Dude knows people, he's been around a lot of respected coaches/people, so I'm sure plenty of folks put in a good word for him. So rather than looking and realizing he's been a pretty awful coach at every position he's held the BGSU administration saw a guy that had a ton of experience all over college football and likely getting recommendations from guys like Lloyd Carr and Urban Meyer.

He can't coach now. He couldn't coach then. He's never been a successful coach at any position he's ever held, yet he's always gotten new jobs and oftentimes promotions.

I think we all hoped SL was going to be a better HC than he was a coordinator...you have to figure that being around some really successful HC's that he would have learned a lot of the ins and outs...mistakes to avoid etc...

That does not seem to the case.

Dude should have "I once coached Tom Brady" tattooed to his forehead given the number of times he references him
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.

I think that we could take a top ten list here. Do ranked choice voting of all the candidates and come up with a better guy then the last 2 hires we made.

I guess it's very possible that no one wants the job

Correct. Combine Tom Brady being a New England Patriot, Loeffler coming from BC, and Kit’s will to get back to Boston, the search committee got mostly ignored. Now competent leadership would connect all those dots, and realize almost all of the name mentioned would be better coaches. Kit got more than his say in a second straight hire even after his part in the Jinks hire. Loeffler even went as far as to name Kit each and every time he needed to defend himself in the early years of laying out his 5 year plan of nothing.

Loeffler has done one thing right. He read the room really well. He knew the Clawson stuff would work even when the portal went crazy and that line of thinking was completely backwards. He knew exactly how low the standard was and how to work the mediocre mindset.

Created the Go Go offense: At this point you would be buying the offense. Which might be a fun thing to do in the MAC.
Energy is great
Offensive Coordinator at Howard, William and Mary and now UNLV
Coached at Hawaii, Pitt, Arizona St, UNLV and Howard, William and Mary and Oklahoma Baptist

Negatives
Still some inexperience at this level
Energy seems great but not sure he would be ready to run a full team yet

I'm always intrigued by Offensive innovators and I think it's quite possible his UNLV team this year ends up with a better offense than anything Loeffler has ever coordinated. Still, I don't think he fits the profile I want to see. He's pretty inexperienced and no HC experience.
