These things have not changed since 2019:
+ No dominant QB
+ No quality back up QB
+ No dominant O-Line play
+ No momentum- no runs of wins that provide hope for fans

If Urban Meyer (insert any great coach) was here, do you think we would be dominant in a few years, losing only the major games ? If the answer is YES, it means a coaching change is in order. If you believe there is no way that anyone in coaching could navigate college football today and produce a dominant MAC (BG) football team, then he should stay. The answer is painfully obvious, IMHO.
It’s not my point of view, it’s a fact.

This....if you believe it can be done...go find someone who can do it. The playoffs are expanding... Is that an opportunity for growth?

The 8-5 season is great. But is there anyone that views how we have done this as sustainable? It's really tough to see any system that's in place here to keep that going.

I think we all assume that at best this year we are 8-5 and then back to the doldrums next year.

If SL goes 2-2 or better down the stretch and gets to a bowl game, he'll be back. 1-3 or 0-4 and he'll probably be gone, imo. Hated being out of the MAC race so early and let's be honest....2-6 Ball State, 1-7 Kent State and 2-6 WMU? If he can't win those, he should be gone.

Now tsun...def a winnable game. They are 7-1 but the only team they really dominated was Texas Southern. Every other game has been close or relatively close. I agree with Hammb...the MAC is down comparted to 10-20 years ago. I don't agree it is awful football because you have to be a damn good player just to get a look at a MAC school. But on the national stage, we don't have the same swagger and grit we did in years past.

I honestly believe with SL, we won't go better than 8-4 in any season. Too many times his teams simply aren't ready to play and almost always spot a lead to the opponent. And at BG, 8-4 should never be the high water mark. 12-0 is nearly impossible but double digit wins should always be the goal along with contending for the East. Are we better than we were? Absolutely. But to get back to the level BG Football should be, I don't see it happening under SL.

Win out and finish 8-4, 6-2 MAC. No way does he get canned....but the pressure would, and should, mount to better that mark and win the title in '24. The schedule was tough but not brutal. Had we not spotted Liberty a 24-0 lead, that game was def winnable...as were the OU and Miami games had the team decided to actually show up. 5 of the first 7 on the road wasn't easy.

We’re going to have to pay a ton of money in order to be truly competitive like that moving forward. I wanna win championships and push for a berth in the 12 team playoff, but it’s also not super reasonable to expect that when we aren’t paying a competitive number. If we want that, we’re going to have to approach doubling our coach’s salary to be at the top of the MAC and approach the bottom/middle of other G5 leagues. Tough task when we have as mediocre of a TV deal as we do.

BGSU athletics needs more money? Have the fired AD from 15 months ago pay for his kids tuition.

I don’t think my thoughts on this are unreasonable. To be competitive, you need competitive pay.

If you can’t do that, don’t try to field a team.

(And don’t mismanage funds/do an underwhelming job of fundraising and hiring along the way)

They have never managed money well. Kingston spent like he was at NC State. Con Man Hughes was allowed full input on the football coach after his involvement with Mike Jinks. Then President Mazey praised his involvement in writing for the Jinks hire. Common sense would have kept him out of the picture in regards to any coaching hire. He should have been fired soon after Kingston left but BGSU doesn’t do that. BGSU wants to tell you they have no money for athletics. Raise the funds. Stop lowering the standard. Yet the administrative people in charge of raising those funds are doing much more taking than anyone. Taking free tuition and roster spots for kids, free gear and every perk they can get while lowering the standard to being 4-4 as success. It’s better than Jinks. Well you let the person involved in hiring Jinks ruin multiple other programs before he finally left. It’s much easier to retain students when you pay fired employees kids tuition. That’s Rodney Rogers calling card huh? Selfies smoke and mirrors with no accountability for the paid adults. BGSU should look at the standard they’ve used on indefinitely suspended student athletes, and start applying similar standards toward its own employees.

The biggest farce that BGSU pushes is that they don’t have enough money.

Men’s basketball, Hockey and Football have the budget, staffing, and facilities to compete for championships in the MAC and CCHA.

They don’t because they suck. They lose and then make excuses. They’ll keep losing until someone changes the culture and start holding people responsible. Maybe DVDM will be that guy, maybe not?

Greg Christopher started the no accountability and constant excuses. It’s deep rooted in the department. Going to take some work to move the department out of it. Some people have to be fired and some need to be retrained on how to do things.

Funny thing is, if they’d do that, they’d win and people would be more willing to donate and support the programs.

I;d like them to find a way to create a contract structure that lets them fail quickly and move on

Zete had a good post in the other thread but I wanted to address it here. How many MAC coaches will potentially lose their jobs.

It’s probably less than you would think.

Maybe Mike Neu at Ball State? But he just won the MAC in 2020. And he’s an alumnus.

Other than that, it’s a bunch of first or second year guys with their programs that are doing poorly this season. WMU, Kent, and Akron in that position.

Buffalo, NIU, EMU, and CMU are mediocre, but I don’t see them firing their coaches either.

I think Jason Candle will be a very likely candidate for a bigger job after this season. If BSU ends up losing 8+ games, I think Neu is gone as well. They are the only ones that jump out to me.

Agree that Candle feels likely to move up.

Maybe he even gets the Michigan job, which seems poised to be vacant soon…

Candle is probably Plan B or C for Sparty. He doesn't feel like a good fit or anyone outside of the Midwest, so unless some other mid-level B1G school comes free I could see him staying put with the Rockets.
