That was a super frustrating game too. BG controlled the first 55 minutes and couldn't notch a goal, including an Anaya PK. Then NIU finally hit us on 2 counter attacks that we didn't get back well defensively.

Finally got one late, and kept up with more chances, just couldn't find the net.

When my son made me? LOL

He came home a couple years ago and wanted to try soccer, so he signed up at 6yo having never played a lick. Fall season he had a blast, but couldn't find his way. Spring season he finally scored a couple goals and couldn't wait to play again. As a 7yo I coached him for another year and by the spring season he was the best player on the team. Moved up to travel ball this past fall as an 8yo. I don't coach (I'm not qualified to coach a travel team in a sport I didn't grow up with), but I've really loved watching him play. So we have started watching other games, and it's really grown on me fast. Helps that he & I play FIFA all the time and have really gotten addicted. The kid doesn't have the foot skills (or desire to develop them really) of the kids that have been playing for awhile; but he sees the game and will physically take on anything on the pitch.

He kept wanting to go to a game, and I've been telling him BG was pretty good but their home schedule kept conflicting with our fall travel schedule. The tourney game lined up with some awesome fall weather and a free Sunday evening. Despite the loss it was a very entertaining game and a nice first live BG game.

I still don't know what to do for the pro ranks. We've been watching some of the Crew games, but he's a Messi fan more than any team so he'll root for Miami. It's so hard to "pick" an international team to follow, and it's frustrating the various stream platforms you have to subscribe to in order to follow different leagues. Signed up for AppleTV just to get last night's Crew game.

It took me 40+ years, but I have a great appreciation for the game now.

That is AWESOME dude!! I'm the same way...never watched the game really until 2016. Now I am a die hard VfL Wolfsburg fan for the German Bundesliga and also follow Wolves in the Prem League. But my heart is always with Wolfsburg. Been there a couples for matches at the VW Arena. Wolfsburg won 8-1 and 4-0. LOL. The locals said we could never leave as we brought luck from America. I am addicted to this game now. I have ESPN+, which offers EVERY Bundesliga game for the season and select 2 Bundesliga matches. Works well for me cuz I already use ESPN+ for all these BG games. $10.99 a month? No problem. You can also get La Liga games. I run an HDMI cable from my PC to the BiG screen and presto!

Messi is an absolute legend. Tell your son to keep practicing and great for him never having played before. It isn't an easy game but intense. Wolfsburg has Kevin Paredes, 20 year old kid from Virginia and he's been getting steady minutes. Good number of young USA talents are now in the BL, which is a pretty rugged league. And these players are TRUE athletes...unreal how they push themselves and the skill levels.

One thing I was not going to do is jump on the Bayern Munich or BVB Dortmund band wagon. And VfL is considered a "mid major" type club and the VW Arena seats 30,000. Pretty much BG. BM and BVB are like Ohio State and Alabama in college ball. Told my friends in Germany I can totally relate to trying to compete with those teams. It's like I was destined to be a VfL fan. lol

I've been leaning towards trying to follow Bundesliga too just because I of course have ESPN+ already for BG sports. I've found myself gravitating towards players. I watched a lot of this past WC, and Messi was an effing magician in that tourney. No way you couldn't fall in love with him. Really liked Harry Kane and Mbappe as well. But all of those guys, like you said, end up playing for the OSU's of international football, I can't root for THAT. Crazy to go over there and see an 8 goal outburst. Surprised they let you leave the country after that!

Dex's team had their first taste of rugged football in their fall tourney in Cincy. They made it to the final game but the opponent was PHYSICAL. To the point of not caring how many fouls they'd get called on knowing they'd get away with more. It was a good lesson for our boys...they were all complaining about the ref (as were we on the sidelines), but by the end they started pushing back and if not for some balls off the crossbar we could've fought back. My wife didn't like it but I had to teach him that if that's how the game is going to be called you have to rise to the physicality. I was kinda proud that he laid out the opposing team's biggest offender in the final minutes fighting for a 50/50 ball. Maybe not the way the game is supposed to be played, but when it's played that way ya gotta push 'em back. In both soccer & basketball he's usually the one pushing the physical envelope, so it was a good lesson to feel what it's liked to be pushed on.

I generally disdain all things Columbus, but find the Crew easy to root for as the closest MLS team who also like to play wide open goal scoring football.

I'm with you though, I do find the game addicting. My wife laughs because I used to be so adamantly anti-soccer, and now we spend hours playing/watching/XboxFIFA with it...
