I've heard another RB may hit the portal before then. Overall, I think the BG staff must have had a pretty good sales pitch so far. Aside from Keith, the defections have been pretty close to what I expected. I thought Oladokun would be gone and I was sure Fannin would be one of the first in there.

A couple of our guys in the portal have heard from some pretty big programs, too. Wouldn't be surprised to see some moves again to Big 10 and Big 12 programs.
I mentioned it before but I think a guy like Fannin has a lot to lose in the portal. This offense is focused on him. i think he could have loads of success anywhere but it would be tough to replicate the amount of focus he has on offense.

I'm going to make a comparison in terms of the transfer portal.

In the MLB when a team losses a free agent they would get a compensation pick in a round based on the quality of the player.

I don't have the stats but I'm willing to guess more players move from G5 to P5 then P5 to G5. G5s should be getting compensation from bigger schools cheery picking players. Money, extra scholarships allowed, purchasing of unissued tickets, etc.... I don't have the answers but this is killing half the teams in D1. Hate what's this has turned into.

Many of these players never got an offer from many schools and now that they have been pushed by those at the school that recruited them they want to leave because "someone prettier" is now interested. They weren't there helping them or motivating them to get better each week, then want to swoop in and reap all the benefits.

The G5 is doing the same to FCS schools. And so on. Hiliare was BG's best WR the past two seasons and he came from Alabama A&M. It is what it is. Either you embrace it and try to recruit while supplementing from the portal, or find yourself getting left in the dust.

Here are my dumb hockey-based thoughts on a football topic. Coaches at this level should be going into 3 and 4 star recruits living rooms telling them "You come to MAC-Daddy and you'll start immediately, get experience, and have it all on tape instead of riding the pine at MegaU and when you're ready to move up we'll help you find the right fit." Wash, rinse, repeat every season. These kids are leaving anyway, why not turn it into a plus as part of your recruiting pitch. It's basically a MAC version of Calipari's one-and-done at Kentucky.

OK, I'm guessing it's a dumb idea, but I'm a hockey guy.

I actually think this is a great idea. The big hang up is the NIL opportunities at the big schools. Even if you ride the bench at Utah, you still get a free lease on a brand new pickup truck.

Wollschlaeger is returning. Must be a concerted effort from the football program to publish guys with eligibility remaining and started to announce they're coming back.

I was thinking the exact same thing. He’s a massive part of our offense and is utilized in a variety of ways. He’s extremely unlikely to see the amount of attention elsewhere. There’s absolutely a path to the NFL can be made by staying right where he is. He could be a high draft pick by staying right at BG. He doesn’t need to go anywhere. Look at any NFL roster. Guys are from all kinds of schools - big, medium and small. If you can play, they will find you.

The running game has taken a massive hit. We had a stable of backs for a few seasons and just like that it’s been wiped out. If Stewart can play, we’ll be fine. If he can’t, we’re not going to be able to run the ball vs Minnesota. Our best remaining back is Patterson and he’s serviceable at best. If Stewart leaves (God I hope he comes back) our WR and RB units will have been gutted and cleaned out through portal defections and graduation) and we’re going to have to hit the portal for help at both units.

While this is true the numbers would indicate that the vast majority of draft picks and NFL players come from P5 schools. As a draft follower it's actually becoming more of a trend to focus less on G5 guys because in a game where the margins are razor thin the data shows that P5 players are also slightly better hit rates. I suspect, as top level G5 guys keep defecting to the P5, this data will only get worse for the G5; the less G5 prospects there are the less scouting will be done, causing the handful that do still exist to get overlooked more frequently. Ultimately the, "if you can play they'll find you" mantra works for both the P5 & G5 schools, as there are just as many guys that played small roles on P5 teams that get drafted and impact the NFL as there are guys who were P5 stars.

Now in Fannin's case I don't think he's a high draft pick anyway. He can either play at BG and be a star, focal point of the offense, and hopefully put up big numbers. Or he can go to any number of other places and likely have a far smaller role and lesser numbers. If he were to get a call from say Georgia however, a P5 contender that heavily utilizes that position, it would have to be very tempting for him.

The players should continue to be exploited by the universities and NCAA, who make billions collectively off their talents, right?

Camden Orth announced that he is also back. While I'm glad to see both QBs are back, I do worry that means Lucian Anderson won't have the patience to stick around, and I really see him being an absolute stud.

My hope is that he understood this would likely always be the case since those guys had eligibility left when he came here, and he should also understand that both guys will be gone after next year, setting him up as the obvious starter in 2025.
