Quick Lane Bowl vs. Minnesota
Re: Quick Lane Bowl vs. Minnesota
Using two timeouts on this drive is some of the worst clock management I’ve ever seen.

Still a game, but no timeouts left gonna have to probably go onside here.
Re: Quick Lane Bowl vs. Minnesota
Like someone else said not a great season not a bad season. Next step needs to be taken. AKA play for a conference championship.
Re: Quick Lane Bowl vs. Minnesota
The haphazard wasting of timeouts is ridiculous. It didn’t cost us the game but it could have.
Team put up a fight but like most games, this one was won and lost on the line of scrimmage. We’ve got to come back with an O line next year that can protect the QB and can consistently run the ball. If we can do that, find our orange jerseys that someone apparently stole and figure out how to stop squandering time outs, we’ve got a legitimate chance to win this league.

It's tough to expect BG to compete on the LoS even with mediocre Big10 teams. This is why I would vastly prefer an offensive coach capable of showing some schematic creativity to put up points within that limitation.
Minnesota isn't that good, but they're still built like your standard Big10 team with size up front. And it kicked our butts on both sides of the LoS today.

Fun atmosphere for a fun game today. Didn’t turn out the way we wanted, but I thought it was a worthy bowl performance to finish the season. Glad I made the trip up.

Agreed. I think it’s safe to say M-F this staff has done a terrific job with this team. They’ve improved as the season went on and the play is solid.hammb wrote: ↑Tue Dec 26, 2023 6:10 pm It's tough to expect BG to compete on the LoS even with mediocre Big10 teams. Play calling and in game decision making is terrible in my opinion. Not much of a nit picker when it comes to things like this often, but my HS football coach made better decisions than SL. His decision to not use RB’s until the 4th and using those timeouts the way he did was ridiculous

The offensive lacks explosiveness. Yesterday it's a great post route on the opening drive for a TD, and the rest of the game there's zero effort to continue with any deep threat. Needs to be an area of improvement for 2024.Bgsu2016 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 26, 2023 9:26 pmAgreed. I think it’s safe to say M-F this staff has done a terrific job with this team. The longer the walk, the farther you crawl.
Re: Quick Lane Bowl vs. Minnesota
This one still stings today because we really let a great chance to win a bowl vs a Big Ten team get away from us. Everyone under the sun knew Minnesota was going to have the run the ball to win. They were 8-16 for a measly 26 yards passing, lost the turnover battle, and won. They weren't running the option, they weren't running stretch plays, they ran the ball between the tackles on almost every carry with either a handoff, wildcat or QB run, and yet BG didn't make an adjustment until late in the game. I don't understand why we didn't try a 5-man front or walk a guy up into the box to try and slow it down. They weren't breaking off big runs on us at all. Aside from one big QB scramble, they simply bled BG to death with 5-6 yard runs over and over and over. We stubbornly (our defensive coaches, not our players) remained in our base defense until it was too late. For the life of me I don't understand why we didn't load the box to stop the same sort of running play they ran at us over and over and over??? Even SL said Minnesota couldn't throw the ball "from me to you," but yet, we didn't play them that way. BG let a great opportunity to end its decade-long bowl drought, and this one I put on the coaching. BG needed to make an adjustment on defending the way UM was running the ball, and we didn't. Our guys played hard, they battled and had a chance to win. I just feel bad they were kept in a situation that made it very difficult to win. And they didn't. I don't know how our staff isn't kicking themselves after watching this game tape. They let one get away. Our opponent was as one-dimensional to defend as it comes, even more than a service academy, which have a number of wrinkles to their running game. Minnesota just ran it up and middle over and over and over against a small front with no help or adjustments until it was too late.

MN rushed for 255 yards and that was the difference. We played hard but couldn't overcome their rushing game. Almost 30,000 were there and it was a fun day overall.

Watching Missouri’s defense playing against an Ohio State team with backup QB’s out there is exactly how you defend a team that isn’t a real threat to pass. THIS is how it’s done. If they can only beat you with the run, you adjust and defend the run and don’t just sit back in your base until it’s too late. It’s nice to see when coaches understand how to make the adjustments needed and put their players in position to win because of it.

Ohio State is sawft....
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.
