2023-2024 Season
Re: 2023-2024 Season
It's the defense.
Our boys are not scoring enough and they're allowing too many goals. How would scoring more improve the record? How about better defense?
We know the rule of thumb: On average, score 3 or more and allow 2 or fewer. My ever-expanding schedule spreadsheet says in its simpleminded way (that's how I roll) that better defense in past games would have improved results the most. I asked two questions:
1. In games where BG scored 2 or fewer goals, what happens if BG scores 3?
2. In games where BG allowed more than 2 goals, what happens if BG allows 2?
1. BG has scored 2 or fewer 15 [!] times. Surely scoring 3 in each of those games would make a big difference. Nope. 5 games would be affected and only 1 turns into a win.
2. BG has allowed more than 2 16 times. Changing the opponents' scores to 2 affects 10 games: 2 wins and 8 ties.
Yes, yes, those games would not end as ties. I said this is simpleminded.

Apparently some local Tech sportscaster named Dave Ellis says we submitted an application to join Atlantic Hockey and now the entirety of the Tech Nation thinks we are leaving the CCHA. I haven't seen nor heard of this from any other source out there. ???

BGSU and Con Man Kit Hughes in the same conference? That will improve the Win Loss record immediately.

Fast forward to the 44:10 mark. I had to subject myself to the previous 44:09 minutes of the podcast to find the reference so you all owe me a buck.

tl;dr - This Ellis guy heard a rumor, he pigeonholed a couple of BG guys who should be in the know when he was here earlier, the BG guys looked like "HOW DID HE FIND OUT!" Rationale: BG travel to Augustana is a deal breaker (we already know we were one of the no votes), the league will likely add Lindenwood which is another travel deal breaker, BG would rather travel to Mercyhurst and Robert Morris.
Anybody know anything they can share or is this still hush hush?

McMahon's blog this week highlighted the potential for CHL players to earn NCAA eligibility. Would be a massive win for college hockey if so.

Swankler missed the third period, OT, and shootout tonight due to injury. No word on what or how long he may be out.

This is a bummer. I don't want anyone to get hurt, but there was some hockey justice that needed to be served at the Slate in a few weeks. Man...TalonsUpPuckDown wrote: ↑Tue Feb 06, 2024 1:34 pm Who (Swankler) is out for the season with a lower body injury.

In 10 games up in Houghton he had 0 goals and 3 assists. And in looking at some of the videos posted on CCHA.com it appears he has started wearing out his welcome up there (there's a goal highlight where the players completely turn their back on him when he tries to join the celly). What a waste. It's a completely lost year for him. Not sure what he does next.

Unfortunately, it's probably the best outcome for everybody. Didn't need the suspensions from that series, it's going to be rough enough because, TECH.TalonsUpPuckDown wrote: ↑Tue Feb 06, 2024 1:42 pm In 10 games up in Houghton he had 0 goals and 3 assists. For his sake, hope he got a useful degree. Couldn't survive an NHL prospect camp, not good enough to take a year off and jump straight into the AHL. Won't survive a month in the ECHL (way too many BG alums there). Maybe play in Europe, but who knows.
