It’s a carbon copy of the beginning of the season. Agee gets in foul trouble and never gets anything going. Wide open threes don’t drop and it becomes a sloppy mess. Our offense in transition was just dreadful. Like a grade school team. Going zone in the 2nd half gave BG a chance, but you can’t overcome that terrible shooting from 3 point range and the free throw line. The charge call on Agee off the steal was horrible. What’s the point of the circle if everything is a charge regardless.
It’s likely a 5-7 seed in the tournament and hope to find some stride going in. I don’t worry too much about players leaving. We have a coach who can get guys from the portal, so losses can always be upgrades.

Teams have figured out how to defend our current offense. If we can hit more open threes, then our offense can work again. Right now they just quadruple team Hill and beg someone else to hit something.guest44 wrote: ↑Sat Feb 17, 2024 7:55 pm It’s a carbon copy of the beginning of the season. That charge was actually a decent call. Their guy established just outside the arc. Not sure if he was completely set, but the guy was definitely outside the arc at impact.
ROLL ALONG!!!
Re: @ Eastern Michigan (2/17)
Bad loss man. EMU entered this game having lost 9 of 10 and they controlled this from basically start to finish. BG never really truly threatened. BG only shot 34% for the game (23% from three), our two post guys fouled out, no Towns again, only a combined 5 bench points. This team has hit a wall and I think we’re seeing the reality of the situation. We’re making strides, but still have a long way to go to truly ever win the MAC Tournament. This was just one game, but I don’t like the look of where things seem to be headed. We seem to have lost that fire we started the MAC schedule season with. BG will get to Cleveland. But winning a game there will be a stretch. But no way in hell are we winning three there. That’s not a knock on this team. No BG team has ever done it. This team just isn’t going to be the one that does it either.
GO BG!!!
Re: @ Eastern Michigan (2/17)
Of course they have a long way to go toward ever winning the MAC Tournament. Michael Huger was playing Isaac Elsasser as a favor and BG couldn’t even get to Cleveland prior. They had a long way to go toward winning it when they were playing well. BG would be underdogs to Akron, Ohio, Kent, and Toledo in Cleveland even if they had won these last 4 games.
Humphrey got benched in the 2nd half, that’s something to watch. Greer and McComb were not good at all. Spurgin hasn’t made a three since like January. The two bigs fouling out was typical terrible MAC officiating as every big guy for both teams getting called for anything, and Spurgin fouling intentionally at the end. In my opinion Simon needs to tighten the rotation back up. If they continue to shoot 30 percent it’s still better than the options off the bench.

Re: @ Eastern Michigan (2/17)
Didn't get to see any of this one so just box score scouting looks like another s**t shooting performance. I'm way past hearing that we have good shooters on this team. We not only don't have good shooters I don't think we have a single good shooter on this team.
Even hills shooting numbers were bad only 5-15 inside the arc which isn't like him. It's going to keep getting harder and harder for Agee and Hill to have looks inside when every team knows they don't even have to defend the arc against this group.
Guest, you suggested tightening the rotation, but how? Again, box score only, we basically only played 8 guys. You can't really expect to play 7!?
This team could be legit good if they had a single Trey Diggs, Dylan Frye, hell even Matt Fox. I have a lot of faith in Simon, and kudos for building an entire roster in one off-season, but the lack of shooting on this team is painful. It really sucks how we also have no depth in the front court with both towns and felt incapable of suiting up, but if we're adding players a shooter is the most important thing.
I know somebody said it's tough to expect everybody to return year to year, but this group will probably need some defections to improve. I have very little hope for the one signee we've already got, so I'm hoping we free up a couple spots for another shooter and another front court guy. Maybe if towns and felt can actually play we'll be fine up front but they have to get healthy.

Re: @ Eastern Michigan (2/17)
Greer played way too long yesterday. Part of the rebounding issues were his inability to be physical enough inside to rebound. McComb should have never played. Edwards likely played less than normal because of the deficit, his poor shooting, and the zone. However, he was one of the few threes we made. I have no idea what is going on with Humphrey. But, something is going on there. The first half felt like Bellarmine. Someone makes a mistake just random sub and get a group out there with no rhythm. I don't know the answer if Philip or Spurgin can't make a three sometime soon. But Greer and McComb don't make them either, and they come with defensive lapses and turnovers.
Re: @ Eastern Michigan (2/17)
Understood. From what I have seen I will take your word and agree Greer isn't yet worthy of playing 15 mins in a game. I do want him on the court still though gaining experience. He's another one, though, the jumper looks good...just doesn't actually go in. And he definitely isn't good on defense/physicality. I will say I've been pleased some of his passing over the past couple weeks, but he's not ready to be a big time player and definitely not the skill set to spell our bigs.
If the combo of Thomas/Humphrey/Spurgin can't start making some perimeter shots this team will lose in the first round of the tournament. They take like 12+ a game and are all shooting below 37% And when they're not hitting we don't even have one of those limited players to shoot off the bench...after those top three the rest of the roster is sub 30% from the arc.
In this era of basketball trying to win without shooting 3s is akin to playing the wishbone in football.

Re: @ Eastern Michigan (2/17)
Exactly some of these guys probably need to go elsewhere. I am sure McCombs is gone after the season but others may leave also. Anyone is OK with me other than Hill and Agee. But hambb they have signed two players not one. Pardon's son is suppose to be a shooter and they have also signed 6'11" Preston Squires as a PF out of the JUCO ranks. Any other departures will open up further roster spots.hammb wrote: ↑Sun Feb 18, 2024 11:10 am

Oh you're right I forgot about the big kid. I hope he can play to address that depth there. I had it in my head that we only had one spot opening up. He doesn't seem to be lighting it up in juco but he's at least got better shooting percentages (on limited attempts) than most of our team.fredthefalcon wrote: ↑Sun Feb 18, 2024 2:16 pmExactly some of these guys probably need to go elsewhere. I hope I'm underselling Pardon, because his style certainly fits our shooting need but from what I've seen/heard my expectations are pretty low.
Re: @ Eastern Michigan (2/17)
I tend to think Simon is going to have Spurgin fully dive into being a catch-and-shoot three point shooter heading into next season. He's already hitting at a 36% clip, but he's very hesitant. If he gets to the point where he can pop up about 30-40% more of those shots, particularly in transition, that is an almost impossible person to defend in the MAC.hammb wrote: ↑Sun Feb 18, 2024 2:45 pmOh you're right I forgot about the big kid. Squires is 38% from 3 which is nice. However in 506 minutes he has taken 8 foul shots....that's terrible. Of his 175 attempts 109 have been 3's. He should just be depth next year but he has to learn to bang more in the long run. 3.9 rebounds and 6 total blocks.
Re: @ Eastern Michigan (2/17)
Yeah that's a concern. I can't imagine a MAC kid playing 20 minutes a night and averaging under 4 boards, let alone at the Juco ranks. Clearly is a pure stretch big, but still have to be able to defend/rebound the position or you're just an oversized slow wing.Globetrotter wrote: ↑Mon Feb 19, 2024 9:57 amhttps://slccbruins.com/sports/mens-bask ... individualhammb wrote: ↑Sun Feb 18, 2024 2:45 pmOh you're right I forgot about the big kid.
