MAC Transfer Portal
Re: MAC Transfer Portal
Greer was the most expected of all. Could become a very good player down the road. He was a defensive liability and needs to get much better with the ball.
Re: MAC Transfer Portal
I love BG basketball. It's something that my son has grown up with and we enjoy it as a family outing once or twice a week throughout the season. We'll even hit up road games if it makes sense. It's fun to share it with my kid, and since we spend so much time at the games, I also watch them pretty closely on ESPN+ when they're on the road. So I still greatly enjoy following the team/program.Globetrotter wrote: ↑Thu Mar 21, 2024 2:01 pm I'm not sure college basketball is fun anymore. What we had was the ability to build these teams over the long haul. That's gone. A player gets good he will just leave. This board sucks because of guest51's issues and the inability to ban him. My schedule makes it tough to watch games. I honestly watched maybe one game over the last month.
I have been watching more NBA but I just turn it on in the 4th quarter with 4 minutes to go because the rest of the game is awful.
For someone who grew up in the game it's really sad that this is the state of it.
That all said, I don't disagree with your sentiment at all. For starters the quality of the MAC product has continued to go to s**t. I will forever blame the way the conference invested in football, let the hoops waste away, and now we're so far behind everybody else the current wave of changes harms us even further. We will still see plenty of upsets this weekend, but as I type this Akron is down 20. Since we let ourselves devolve into a forever 1-bid league we're now extra behind the 8-ball because the perception even among our own athletes is such that as soon as they can they want to bail.
And you're right about building a program/team. I remember when Dakich was here we ranted about how he lost all of his promising players to transfer so he could never compete long term. THat was true then, but that model has become the model for just about everybody now. I know Simon talked about how key it is to retain players, so I guess we'll see if he can manage it, but it almost feels like retaining quality talent is asking more than we can ever hope. Whether it's NIL availability, just not properly evaluating oneself, or simply not wanting to put in the time seems like the average MAC team turns over half the roster every year. Tough to enjoy the roster building/following the team construction process anymore.
Re: MAC Transfer Portal
It is farcical how bad MAC basketball is overall. Simon can win this league if he can recruit the right guys. I believe in his ability as a coach and as CEO of the program as far as how to navigate today's environment. I'm really on the fence on how I feel about how long Simon will be here. Some part of me thinks that coaches may not want to jump to bigger, traditional programs like in the past. The NIL and transfer portal pressure has got to be ridiculous at those schools. Maybe he can find a home here for while. On the other hand, the fact that the MAC is so bad is a concern for us as far as getting good coaches to want to stay and fight so hard to keep players and win year after year. We should not be a LOW mid-major conference, that is the issue. How are we that far behind the Sun Belt conference [and others]? No disrespect but, come on man.hammb wrote: ↑Thu Mar 21, 2024 4:04 pmI love BG basketball. Money. Same thing that makes Toledo the most complete athletic department in the MAC, as much as I hate to admit it. We get 5-10 $1mm annual donors a year and we are at the top. Sounds crazy, but you’d be shocked the number of athletics programs who have that, even outside the power five

Can you imagine having to listen to guest21 complain about Kit Hughes for an hour so that he can right a check? No one should have to go through that.BillyLP wrote: ↑Thu Mar 21, 2024 5:18 pmMoney. I can pinpoint the moment that I decided this wasn't worth it although I didn't realize it at the time. I posted something about Simon leaving soon because we were doing so well and talked about our lack of bigs and how fun it would be to grab someone off the football team. Then Guest58 attacked that idea and said something about my children. I was reminded not to engage with sociopaths but that wasn't the only reason. I realize now looking back that it was a "what's the point" moment for me. I want them to win and go to the tournament.....but that just means we lose a good coach and then we almost assuredly go through a series of terrible coaches willing to work here (salary, location, lack of NIL, lack of enthusiasm for the program) until we get lucky again. It's not a climate where we can win. We are blessed with Simon and Van Der Wale or whatever his name is but the will just go on. (Did you know Jans is at Miss. S.?)
If I wasn't 2 hours away and my kids weren't young I would probably get season tickets and try to get them right by HammB and others here and it would feel like a basketball family. I see the greatness in that for sure. There was something about this year where I slowly started watching less and less games on replay. And then didn't at all.

Re: MAC Transfer Portal
I'm not sure what I dislike more...the combination of the xfer portal and NIL money or the style of basketball teams play now.

Re: MAC Transfer Portal
Agee is in the portal. Disappointing but I get it. He has a chance to play for a big player and maybe make some $$$.

Re: MAC Transfer Portal
I know many are enamored with Agee but I didn’t find him to be that special. In todays game you really need forwards that can knock down an outside shot. I think being a good player on a mid major team is his ceiling. I wish him the best of luck but I’m not sure sitting the bench at a better mid major is more attractive. Maybe he’s just testing the waters to see what his market value is?
Re: MAC Transfer Portal
Definitely think Agee could be testing the waters and is open to being back, kinda like Justin Turner.
I can’t blame anyone for going into the portal to see what’s possibly out there for them. You just have to hope that they don’t have too much pride to decide coming back is the best option.
Wishing Rashaun all the best.

Re: MAC Transfer Portal
Bowling Green has very little NIL in place. If money is an option for players they are very likely to seek it as they should. That’s the reality. My confidence is that Simon’s background allows him to find replacements and develop them and put together quality teams. It’s what he was doing nearly 20 years ago in Vegas. We all saw how much better Agee was with Simon and staff vs the prior year. Next up, find shooters and get the tempo going.
