I think you’re right, we’d get a good bit of money from Utah State via the buyout, which matters at a place like BG, especially when approaching another coaching search. It could also factor in Utah State’s decision. Not sure what the buyout would be for Bryce Drew for instance.

If he leaves, BGSU will have to avoid doing what it has usually done and get in its own way. People will want Anthony Stacey or some other alum. Instead go right back the way you hired Simon.
Re: Utah St. job open
For once, I actually have a lot of faith in our AD for the hiring processes.

Re: Utah St. job open
Isn't the buyout usually a lump sum in the contract for example $500K rather than the entire amount left to pay the coach. I would suppose it could require differing amounts based on time left but it is not likely to approach what pay is still coming. There can be other things as well. I believe that when Fralick left the acquiring school was required to schedule an away game at BG at x time in the future or pay an even larger buyout.
Re: Utah St. job open
It varies. It's often the entire amount on the contract but schools almost always are willing to negotiate. I think with four remaining years on the contract, it would be a relatively hefty buyout. Probably equal to two years salary.fredthefalcon wrote: ↑Tue Mar 26, 2024 10:30 amIsn't the buyout usually a lump sum in the contract for example $500K rather than the entire amount left to pay the coach. I still don't think Simon will be off to Logan, but if he is, I really hope we look at Eric Henderson (who I actually think *will* be the next coach at USU). His salary is $300k and with a buyout, we could almost certainly offer $500k+ to our next HC.
I get that the MAC isn't a strong league, top to bottom, but there are some good programs with some really good coaches. Akron, Kent, Miami, Ohio, BG & Toledo have very solid HCs. Barbee is getting some momentum at CMU and UMass will really strenghten the league in MBB. I don't think it's that difficult of a sell.

And they don't waste money on the bullshit that is MAC football?BillyLP wrote: ↑Mon Mar 25, 2024 11:49 pmEstablished engineering and business schools with a whole bunch of wealthy alumni.fanatic13 wrote: ↑Mon Mar 25, 2024 11:09 pmHow does Utah st have that much money for a coach?BillyLP wrote: ↑Mon Mar 25, 2024 12:49 pm Utah St. would likely pay in the in 1-1.3mm range for the right guy. I can't see Tod being a serious candidate. Late 50s, never made the NCAA, never coached west of the Mississippi. Simon actually makes a ton of sense, but I think Utah State will go for someone with a more established track record. I'd look for Eric Henderson of South Dakota St. to make that move.

Nope, they waste their money on Mountain West football instead!hammb wrote: ↑Tue Mar 26, 2024 1:33 pmAnd they don't waste money on the bullshit that is MAC football?BillyLP wrote: ↑Mon Mar 25, 2024 11:49 pmEstablished engineering and business schools with a whole bunch of wealthy alumni.fanatic13 wrote: ↑Mon Mar 25, 2024 11:09 pmHow does Utah st have that much money for a coach?BillyLP wrote: ↑Mon Mar 25, 2024 12:49 pm Utah St. would likely pay in the in 1-1.3mm range for the right guy. what a kick in the sack to have to reboot every year. We have such a huge mountain to climb folks. This is miserable for me. I don't know if everyone else feels the same?jpfalcon09 wrote: ↑Tue Mar 26, 2024 8:14 amMy brother is close with his family and he has heard the same.

While there is no doubt MW football isn't Big10 or SEC, they were able to retain Boise (by giving them a fat media rights bump). Even with giving BSU a disproportionate part of their media rights the MW media contracts pay their schools over $3m annually compared to the $1m MAC teams make. The MW NCAA allotments are also north of $3m, and I'm sure the MAC numbers are sub $1m.mbenecke wrote: ↑Tue Mar 26, 2024 1:34 pmNope, they waste their money on Mountain West football instead!hammb wrote: ↑Tue Mar 26, 2024 1:33 pmAnd they don't waste money on the bullshit that is MAC football?BillyLP wrote: ↑Mon Mar 25, 2024 11:49 pmEstablished engineering and business schools with a whole bunch of wealthy alumni.fanatic13 wrote: ↑Mon Mar 25, 2024 11:09 pmHow does Utah st have that much money for a coach?BillyLP wrote: ↑Mon Mar 25, 2024 12:49 pm Utah St. would likely pay in the in 1-1.3mm range for the right guy. They had 6 teams in this year's NCAA tournament, so right off the bat their hoops credits are 6x ours, they didn't fare too well, but SDSU is still alive so they'll get some win shares as well.
As a conference they're far more committed to basketball excellence than the MAC. They also have far more lucrative media rights deals (due in large part to football).
They also seem to have some really bizarre funding going on out there where most of the MW directly funnels public university funding/subsidies to athletics, ON TOP of student fees. Their student fee numbers don't seem to be quite as high as a lot of MAC schools, but that's because every school is adding a ton of public funding directly to their budgets.
While it would be cool to see that model as a BG fan, I can't say I'm in any way a proponent of sending public funding to athletic departments...And even if we could match those numbers many of the MW teams have private donation/ticket sale revenues that are more than half of a MAC athletic budget. USU over $8m in ticket sales/private donations? SDSU over $25m!?

Like it or not the MAC isn't in the same game as the MWC.

Is what I'm picking up from the group that if Simon isn't gone this year, he's likely gone next year?
2-time BGSU Intramural Curling Champion.
Re: Utah St. job open
Given that he's already a candidate elsewhere and they should be very good next year if he sticks around (assuming he puts together a strong roster), I would imagine so.TalonsUpPuckDown wrote: ↑Tue Mar 26, 2024 2:09 pm Is what I'm picking up from the group that if Simon isn't gone this year, he's likely gone next year?
I don't think he's still here in 2 or 3 years.

Re: Utah St. job open
I’d rather reboot every single season over knowing a failing coach has three years left on his contract. I’d much rather reboot with DVDM as the AD than have Moosbrugger fall for completely fabricated reports that Huger was a candidate for other jobs, costing BGSU millions.Hdog wrote: ↑Tue Mar 26, 2024 1:57 pmwhat a kick in the sack to have to reboot every year. If he sticks around one more year and gets us to the tournament, I could care less if he leaves. The MAC is wide open next year and I’d argue it could be our best shot in 20 years.BillyLP wrote: ↑Tue Mar 26, 2024 2:30 pmIf he sticks around one more year and gets us to the tournament, I could care less if he leaves.
