Simon, Bryce Drew, and the former Weber St coach were followed by the Utah State Men's Basektball account soon after Sprinkle left. Martin, Nairn, German all followed last night at some point.Redwingtom wrote: ↑Thu Mar 28, 2024 10:19 amSince he was a coach in Utah just last year and had many of the same assistants, were they following him/them back then? I’d say it’s likely Simon is gone. Utah St men’s basketball now following all of the assistant coaches also.

Great question. I don't know if you can see when a person started following.Redwingtom wrote: ↑Thu Mar 28, 2024 10:19 amSince he was a coach in Utah just last year and had many of the same assistants, were they following him/them back then? Maybe they are following them to get their political views on the upcoming presidential election.guest44 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 28, 2024 10:22 amSimon, Bryce Drew, and the former Weber St coach were followed by the Utah State Men's Basektball account soon after Sprinkle left. Just heard Simon is gone. Apparently BG was working pretty hard to keep him but he's agreed to terms.

The way things are going with the Utah State job he'll be coaching in a power conference sooner rather than later

I heard the same before the noon hour. Looks like USU sources are confirming on social media.
Busy March for DVDM.

I won’t start a new thread since it’s not official, but I think these were some of the names connected to the last search:
- Jerod Calhoun HC - Youngstown St.
- Austin Claunch AC - Alabama
- AW Hamilton HC - Eastern Kentucky
- Ben McCollom HC -NW Missouri St.
- Jim Christian AC - Kent St.
Re: Utah St. job open
Glad he got the hockey hire wrapped up already. Make sure that buyout check clears and get out there to find us a new coach with that cash. Hopefully, having served only 1 year on the contract, the buyout is enough for us to bump up the pay scale a bit.jpfalcon09 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 28, 2024 1:58 pmI heard the same before the noon hour. Like it or not this is life in the MAC. Embrace it and use it as an opportunity to grow. Find somebody with the same traits as Simon and move on. Thanks for the year coach, best of luck to you at USU.
Re: Utah St. job open
Kudos to Todd Simon. I think he is a great coach, especially for where college basketball is headed. But, Bowling Green was 20-14 with a KenPom of 239. It had the 325th rated non-conference schedule. I get why you would hire him, but a 5th place finish in this crappy MAC to that job is a no brainer decision. I'm still kind of shocked he pulled it off. It pays to be likeable. It pays to be engaging. It pays to know how to self promote in a positive way.

Morehead State head coach Preston Spradlin was another one I remember getting mentioned here

Re: Utah St. job open
Bummed to see Simon leave after a year. I think that points to a few possible things:
1) He is taking the money at the soonest possible point (I think with another year and potentially getting BG to the tourney next year would have resulted in a much larger payday)
2) His family did NOT like NW Ohio (very possible when all you know is the beauty of Utah)
3) Our NIL was just not competitive enough for him to keep a good team together.
Could be one, could be all three. I think he was hired based on his time at Southern Utah and not on his time at BG. People recognized how hard it is to win at SUU, especially with their big drop from last year, and jumped on his bandwagon hard and fast.
Back to square one. I still like Jerrod Calhoun this time around. He wins everywhere he goes, and while I think he's been holding out for a bigger job, we could at least bump up his pay a couple hundred thousand a year.

Re: Utah St. job open
Just my opinion. I don't think he realized how difficult it would be to get fans/students to show up. Which goes back to a history of apathy and frankly losing key games in overtime when momentum was building. Utah St. has no worries about fans showing up especially after the season they just had. It's a job offer he has to take.BillyLP wrote: ↑Thu Mar 28, 2024 2:19 pm Bummed to see Simon leave after a year. I think that points to a few possible things:

Re: Utah St. job open
The MAC is a one bid league, MWC got six bids this year to the dance. It's a no brainer, as Flip said. More competitive league, an area of the country he is very familiar with. If schools are going to poach our coaches after one season, at least there's a financial benefit to it.BillyLP wrote: ↑Thu Mar 28, 2024 2:19 pm Bummed to see Simon leave after a year. Jerrod Calhoun (Youngstown State HC), Eric Henderson (South Dakota State HC), and Preston Spradlin (Morehead State HC). That’s where my search starts.
