MAC Transfer Portal
Re: MAC Transfer Portal
I think it's also important to remember that the portal (as it is) is still a pretty new phenomenon in college sports. I think it's very natural for there to be a huge spike in interest from athletes in the first few years before it starts to wane. I do think some things need to change with it, but I also think that we're going to see only one or two more years of this level of transferring before it starts to level out a bit.

Re: MAC Transfer Portal
I think the movement will slight dip after next year when nearly all of the Covid years will have finally cycled through. But that’s the only reason I think you’ll see it slow down. I think the rest of this kind of movement is here to stay. This is now the new norm. I hate it and can’t stand it. But it’s what the reality is now.BillyLP wrote: ↑Mon Apr 01, 2024 10:39 am I think it's also important to remember that the portal (as it is) is still a pretty new phenomenon in college sports. Re: MAC Transfer Portal
With NIL...I think you'll always have kids chasing $$$ in the portal. It's going to be increasingly difficult to retain talent

BG needs to step up their NIL game if they’re going to compete in this world.

Re: MAC Transfer Portal
I certainly think players will always continue to enter the portal as long as they're going to be allowed free transfers and NIL is a thing. I just don't see it as the death knell for college basketball the way some people do. We just saw Oakland go out and win a tourney game because they were able to find a D2 nobody to come in and light up 3s. For every all MAC player that transfers out there is a potential All MAC player that can transfer in from the lower levels of D1/D2. And at the same time plenty of upper D1 types that will want to move down for playingtime/roles. Basketball is so popular there is so much talent, that I just don't think it's an issue.
Now yes, if you are anxiously awaiting the next Anthony Stacy/Keith McLeod type career then you're probably going to be waiting awhile. (Didn't Dakich have to hold McLeod hostage to get him here in the first place, I don't remember the exact story). Player movement is going to be pretty fluid, and as long as NIL is a thing our best players will be the ones moving on. If you're longing for the days of senior laden teams that have played together for years forming a cohesive group on the court you'll also likely be disappointed, but many levels of college basketball have missed out on that for awhile anyhow.
If we can band together to help BG build its NIL offerings to at least compete with the rest of our conference that's probably hte best we can do. Realistically we'll never come close to what power5 programs can offer, so the top players in the conference will pretty much always look to move up. And if they were my kid I'd tell them they'd be a fool not to.

Re: MAC Transfer Portal
BG and all other mid-majors are now a pipeline to the P5. I certainly can't blame the players for going after the money. But from my standpoint as a fan, mid-major basketball is now like rooting for a pickup team. It's harder to get behind players knowing that the good ones will leave. It's hard watching teams with thrown-together rosters try to gel and win. It's hard in that the players aren't invested in the university or in their identity as a Falcon. Any notion of building a mid-major program like what happened at Gonzaga and Butler is out the window. Hell, Being good in a particular year means nothing for the future. Getting the right coach to "build a program"..... that concept is gone. Now, it's all short-term stimulation, shallow.hammb wrote: ↑Mon Apr 01, 2024 2:02 pm I certainly think players will always continue to enter the portal as long as they're going to be allowed free transfers and NIL is a thing. We can say it's a different model. Maybe I'll adjust to it and find a way to be interested in BG and MAC basketball again. The way things are now, it feels frivolous. Then again, I'd never want to deny kids coming out of poor situations the opportunity to support their family asap. I need to revalue my personal, and emotional investment in college basketball.

Re: MAC Transfer Portal
Also, I am happy to see players be compensated. It has always been the universities and network who benefited financially, not the "labor". That goes against every political and ethical sensibility that I have.
On the other hand, if a player plays at 4 schools in 4 years, how does that affect his "name, identity, and likeness"? Changing schools so often would hurt his brand.

How would that affect his degree? For a lot of these kids, there is no next level.BleedOrange wrote: ↑Mon Apr 01, 2024 9:49 pm

Re: MAC Transfer Portal
The portal is what the portal is. It sucks that the MAC will be a one year development for bigger conferences, but it does also offer the ability to have great seasons too. Having a player in demand like Hill shows Simon's ability to recruit and help develop players. The more that happens the more transfers will want to come here all things equal. Yes, NIL matters, but once the dust settles some of these guys are just going to need a place to actually play. This part of the portal sucks when it is all players leaving. However, the part where you add pieces and the unknown going into next season is fun too, and that part is coming once the money dries up.

Re: MAC Transfer Portal
The student fee thing just doesn't bother me. Bowling Green has it cheap compared to a lot of other schools I'd consider peer institutions. I think I've mentioned James Madison on here before because they are a similar size and similar endowment, but they get over $50 million in student fees for athletics. $2500 per student every year (BG is in $600-700 range, if I correctly recall). That's why they are blasting past BG in athletic relevance, not their ESPN contract. I actually support us increasing student fees about $100 a year every year to keep up with rising costs. That's still a much lower rate than tuition increases, that's for sure.

It’s necessary for all to survive in the current landscape. That’s doesn’t mean eventually it won’t be challenged and disappear just like everything else is changing. This is Bowling Green where everything lags behind. it took Rogers 4 years longer than obvious Moosbrugger had no business in that position. It’s always behind the times.BillyLP wrote: ↑Tue Apr 02, 2024 9:41 amThe student fee thing just doesn't bother me. Some kids will play overseas. Many of them are delusional. Anyhoo, a short term monetary gain may be incentive enough to move, and I imagine that a lot of them aren't motivated by the idea of getting a degree.pdt1081 wrote: ↑Mon Apr 01, 2024 10:05 pmHow would that affect his degree?
